Took Bob to the vet, as her intact eye was tearing badly, and I wanted to get it checked out. They gave her metacam, and eye drops. After a few days with no improvement, we took her back in. They stained her eye and found an ulcer in the center. They gave her more metacam, baytril(to be mixed with fruit juice and fed orally), and told us to continue the eye drops after a few days. She hasn’t started the eye drops yet, but we have been giving her the metaam and baytril. Today, she has barely eaten anything, only a slice of banana, and a plain piece of popcorn. I gently tounched her stomach while holding her, and she flinched away badly. She also has poopy butt, and her nose is running. Her eye has showed no improvement, and looks even worse than before. Our vet thinks she is too old to undergo an eye removal surgery. She is probably around seven. What should our next course of action be? I will call the vet again, but I don’t know what they will do for her.

I’m sorry that Bob is not doing well. Metacam can decrease a rabbit’s appetite and Baytril can cause GI problems, since it upsets the balance of the normal flora. It is often helpful to give a probiotic along with an antibiotic, such as Bene-Bac Plus. It also sounds like she needs to be fed some Critical Care, since she is barely eating. There are other antibiotics that the vet can prescribe, if the Baytril isn’t helping. Did the vet check her teeth? In addition to the ulcer in her eye, she could have a problem with her teeth, which could be causing the runny nose. Maybe if you go ahead and start the eye drops that might help too.

I hope that the medicines will start helping Bob.
