I’ve found this aite informative in the past and seemed like the best place to post this story. Here goes.

Panda was a white, black spotted holland lop, he started life with his first owner as an easter bunny, and like most, after some time passed the child lost interest and a new owner was searched for, the new owner happened to be my own family, you see my family had wanted a pet dog, or cat, I’m not a dog person, cats are ok but I didnt want to deal with the non stop hair on everything/clothes. So I was asked about this rabbit and I was fine with it, yeah the hair but mostly just on the floor a couple times a year. we got him , not sure how old he was but he still grew a bit so were guessing probably about a year, took him in and had him fixed. early on he had a messy poop butt problem and the vet shaved his butt, problem solved, never came back. over the next year and a half or so I had done all the maintenance for him, cage, food, etc. and played with him a bunch, he used to always come up and sit at/on my feet.at one point he stopped chewing on cords, and later we noticed one of his teeth was growing a bit deformed, this didn’t actually cause any problems in his life, we think he may have bit through the wrong cord and gotten a shock, but no way to know for sure. so some years later down the road he stops eating, or eating less at least, and not going anywhere, took him in and found out cataracts had caused him to become mostly blind, it took a few months but he slowly got used to it, cautiouslt comming out now and then but not too much, however still whenever a light was turmed on his head would pop up, and when it came to time to eat he always.circled my feet and tumped into his cage, streaching as high as he could in the corner reaching for his treat he would get once a day. ebery once in awhile he would be sleeping though and not really interested, but when he wales up a bit later usually he was all over it. he was a picky rabbit it took some time to find foods, we tried alot and eventually found out he would only eat carrots, collard greens, dandelion leaves and his pellets and timothy hay. treats when he was young he would eat different ones as he grew up it turned into just these pretzel treats and yogies, and soon after just yogis of which he got one a day for the remaining 4 years or so.
I don’t think he ever really got over his blindness, since then he had 3 or 4 areas he only really went too and those eventually dwindled down to just in his cage unless it was feeding time he jumped out and ran around feet. and also from time to time on the weekends my wife would use him to wake me, put him on the bed and let him jump around me. about a year or two we decided to get him a couple friends maybe they could help him around, we got a mini rex, penny, and a lionhead, leo, the mini rex is very energetic, the lionhead is much more laid back, after a couple months they settled in there ways, unfortunately panda never really wanted to leave his cage, he got along with penny to a point, she was too energetic for him, tolerate it for a little bit then get eiritated and chase her out of his cage, sometimes they would sit together, or he would sit outside her cage at night from time to time, penny turned out rather destructive and smart at getting into bunny proofed areas, plus she ate everybodys food, unfortunately she ends up in her cage every night and can realy only come out when people are home, other than that all 3 have always had free roam. him and leo on the other hand never had any problems, when penny goes into her cage at night panda would very often come out and he and leo would sit next to eachother behind the table for awhile. Next part is hard to type, so I’m sure some people might have it hard to read. on Monday night my daughter went to feed the three of them, panda didn’t want his food or treat, was sleeping, uncommon but not rare, she never said anything to us, Tuesday evening after we got back from some after work errands my daughter then informed us that he didn’t eat last night and still hasn’t eaten, at this point there was some concern so my wife had picked him up so I could check him for signs of diarrhea. or anything of the sort, and there were none but he had absolutly no fight or resistance, something was very wrongso my wife had put him on our bed and cleaned his cage, put food/water in front of him just in case and proceeded to look up a pet er that could do rabbits(his vet wasn’t 24 hr and this was around 730p.) we had found one and I was about to call when panda fell to his side, laying, much like he usually did but without his head propped just with the side of his face agains his ear laying on the bed, this was when we knew that he wasn’t gonna make it, knew the drive was too far, pet him gently, a minute later his legs moved a little like he was trying to run but on his side, thinking maybe he wanted to be a more farmiliar place so I gently picked him up and carried him to the carpet right in front of his cage, right before I got there he let out a large violent twitch that almost jumped him from my arms, however did not. layinf him on his side(the only way he could lay at this point) slowly pet him, as he passed away. we were thinking it was old age getting the best of him at first, my wife continued to think this for awhile as she doesnt really notice the details as I did, there was some twitching yes, he grunted a few times softly and I watch him look like he was trying to breath his mouth would open and close a few times, pet him untill we thought he was gone and let him set motionless for a number of minutes there were a couple of times in this period we thought he had passed, and may have, but continued to twitch a bit here or there, I picked up his completely limp, lifeless body, lfelt like a ragdoll, to put him on a pillow when I picked him up he released his bladder all over me, I wasn’t ready to accept it I had planned to put him on a pillow with some water and food over night, just hoping he would have.woken up and eaten I had put him down and recomposed myself and pet him, at this point he had gotten very stiff, no more like a ragdoll, at that point I knew he was gone for sure. I left him be for around 20 min to let everyone say goodbye, then pucked him up and wrapped him in one of my favorite shirts and at 8:30 Tuesday night I had buried my friend, and put away his cage and stuff. we had him about 6 years, think he was 7. never get to feel him on my feet again(which didn’t happen since he went blind anyway..) no more begging for his treat or waking me up, I wont see him pop his head up when the light goes on nore will I get to pet him in his cage anymore and hear him clicking his teeth. as he passed I could see he was in pain and something wasn’t right so I looked into it and found his life span wasn’t 6-9 years as I was told it was closed to 7-14, and that it probably wasn’t old age but gi stasis. I was there was more I could’ve done, wiah we knew sooner..
I let my wife know what I found out however wouldn’t tell the kids nor did mention at all the pain I saw that I don’t think anyone else noticed. what’s worse is I didn’t know to leave him a bit so the other two could comprehend it, I wasn’t aware of the need till I read it later. to them he just disappeared they all seem fine only thing I’ve notice off with them is sometimes they will sit where his cage was, or if I lay where his cage was thry always come up to me and leo licks my hand and demands to be petter and bunny runs around my sniffing me from all directions. I seem to be having a harder time with it than the rest of my family, each day gets harder for me, for them each day gets easier. I hope his short years were happy and i hope he enjoyed his bling years of lounging and wasnt miserable. I’m posting my story here in some hope that it will help me. thank you for listening.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a pet you have gotten close to. Know you know to take your other bunnies to the vet if they did not eat. Panda lived a long life, and he loved you.
