It sounds and looks like your bunny as an abscess/abscesses. Bunnies are prone to abscesses. Abscesses are cavities filled with pus and can occur if the bunny has gotten a sore of some sort, f ex from fighting with another bunny.

Bunny pus is thick and tooth-paste like and not at all like human pus. The abscess needs to be cleaned out by a vet and the bun put on antibiotics.

I agree this is not just a sore healing, it probably started out a sore but then bacteria got in and started growing and the bun’s immune-system fought back and an abscess formed. I’m glad you are taking your bun to a vet. You can rinse the sore with saline (human ey-wash is fine), but try not to touch it too much until you get to the vet.

Is your bunny eating and drinking and pooping?

You’ll need antibiotics at the very least and maybe something for the pain. Also a cleaning of the abscesses like bam said.
Is your bunny living outdoor? With another bunny? I mean, it’s not normal at all for a rabbit to find himself with several wounds / abcesses so there are clearly things to be done to prevent a recurrence once he’s cured. If he’s outside be very careful because that kind of wounds attract flies and you might find yourself with a flie-strike on your hand (flies lay eggs on wounds and the maggots will eat the rabbit’s flesh – they can reach the bones and kill the rabbit in a few days). So take a look at the rabbit everyday to check there are no maggots – 24hours is all they need to appear.

It’s hard to tell you how serious it is from photos – it depends on the general condition of the rabbit and also of the stage of the infection. If your rabbit is eating and pooping alright it should be fine if treated soon.

I agree that they definitely need cleaning out and antibiotics. The white pus means that it’s infected and your bunny needs antibiotics.

Aki makes a very good point about open wounds and flies as well, something to keep in mind.

I hope you can manage to get your rabbit to a vet.

Please bring the rabbit inside until you can get to a vet if it’s an outdoors-rabbit, because what Aki says is very important, flies can come and lay eggs in the wounds and the eggs will hatch and it is a terrible thing. It can happen in as little as 6 hours in the summer.

It’s very likely the rabbits got into a bit of a fight and there was bighting and then the wounds got infected. This is not uncommon with rabbits, they are prone to fighting. The wounds still needs to be seen by a vet and thorougly cleraned out and treated with antibiotics (as we have already said, I know.) It’s really good that you can have him inside until he gets seen and it’s of couse great that he’s eating and pooping =)

My bun has several absecess as well, we just got her from a couple who housed 2 male bunnies. She’s only 12 weeks old, she has a good temper. We’ve been feeding her Timothy hay, and oxbow young essential pellets, is there any other way other than saline to help with the absecess. Eating and drinking are normal, poop is nice and hard
