For about half the day today, Tinkerbell has been laying in the dark corners of her cage.. She’s not getting excited about her treats like she normally does. She was out of her cage last night acting normal and she seemed fine this morning.. I have her cage door open, and she would normally run out right away and be free, but she’s not doing that now. I’m very worried about her and my vet is currently closed. What could be wrong? What should I look for? =[

Is she eating and drinking normally? How are her poops. Right now it sounds like the beginning of stasis, which is dangerous if left alone

Her poops look normal and my husband and I have been syringe feeding her pineapple juice and water. She won’t eat though, she only took two small pieces of papaya treat from me, but she won’t touch her pellets or hay at the moment. I even tried to massage her stomach a little bit. She keeps running back to her cage though in the same spot and won’t move away. She will kinda groom herself normally from time to time, but other than that, she’s not acting normal at all. I don’t know the last time she’s pooped though.

Since no vet is available at this moment, I’d give her some baby gas drops (simethicone), in case this is gas. It’s typical of gas that a bun doesn’t want to move, just hides and lies down. That’s bad for them, because exercise helps with gas, but sometimes you just can’t make the bunny move around. Baby gas drops are deemed safe to give on suspicion of gas according to Medirabbit and to Dana Krempels. You can give 1 ml every hour for 3 hours, then 0,5 ml every 2-3 hours, but it should help pretty quickly.

A bunny with tummy pain often gets hypothermic, so make sure she doesn’t. If you can sit her in your lap that’s good, because human body heat won’t get her too warm. Also keep up the very light massages, but don’t if her tummy feels distendend. If you are two humans and you have a digital thermometer you can take her temp, this video with mary Cotter is really good, I used it when I needed to take my bun’s temp: take a bunny’s temp

Normal temp is  between 100.5 and 103.5. Even on a warm day, a poorly bun can get hypothermic, so taking the temp is really useful.

Pineapple juice is good primarily because it has some glucose in it, and that can help perk a bunny up. Will she eat some fresh greens? Fragrant herbs like cilantro, parsley and mint can sometimes entice a bun to eat. Mint is traditionally used as a digestive aid. Dipped in water sprigs of herbs will give her some additional moisture. Hydration is very important for the intestines.

That she does groom herself and that she took 2 small papaya treat pieces is very good. Esp the grooming sounds hopeful, a really poorly bun won’t bother with grooming.

Obviously empty out her litter-box and refill with all fresh litter so you can keep a close eye on output.

If she doesn’t perk up pretty soon and starts pooping/eating (couple of hours) after having gotten simethicone, she will need a vet. They can warm her up, give her sub Q fluids and a motility drug.

                Sounds like vet time.

I was just thinking of you bam, bam knows about GSI, think my bunny was given something for his tummy to get it moving and an antibiotic.

I currently have her in my lap. We gave her plain water and more pineapple water, and read somewhere before I saw your reply to give orange bayer mushed up in water. So we tried that. She ate a small piece of kale, nibbled on some arugula (her fav) ate a small treat and I was able to hand feed her maybe 6 or 7 pellets, then she refused to eat more. She makes that teeth chattering sound she usually makes when she likes something when I was massaging her, and I think I massaged her for about 30-1 hour. I hope she’s gonna be ok. The vet opens at 7:30 am and I wanna get her in there asap. I love her so much, I was crying thinking about how terrible she must feel right now. =/ I will see if my husband can go back to the store again to get the gas drops. I feel like maybe that will be better than what we’ve been doing thus far.

She’s eating her pellets now! Slower than normal, but she’s eating thank God!! I will keep an eye on her and see if she will eat any of her greens in the morning and then call the vet. Thank you guys for your input. I appreciate it so so much. I knew I could turn to the forum for help. <333

This sounds SO great! Yay for eating pellets, even if it’s slower than normal. Now poop for your mummy, little girl!

My bunny Bam also teeth-chatters when I massage his belly when he has a bout of gas. It’s the only time he’ll allow me to touch his belly.

Her poops that are not in the litter box look like cecotropes that are a mushier than the normal poops, but I have read before that can be normal. Only Diaherra is a cause for concern, right? Everything is looking normal now. She just got excited for her treats again and so I gave her something tiny (I don’t wanna over do it with the treats) I also just gave her some of the baby relief drops, but I will have to go to bed soon, so I will try to get in another dose before then just in case.

Aww, Bam is so cute! It’s nice he lets you do that for him when he needs the help. I had to get Tink into a bunny burrito to make her stay near me. haha! I am feeling so much more relieved now.

Only true diarrhea is a cause for concern, that is right. With true diarrhea you see watery/mucousy stools, lots of it, and no other type of poop at all. This is an emergency because a bunny can become dehydrated very quickly when lots of fluids leave the body via the intestines.

Poop irregularities such as oddly shaped poop or mushy cecals is a consequence of a tummy upset and it will right itself – but it can take a week, sometimes longer. How truly great she gets excited for her treats again! That is such a good feeling for a bunny-mummy!

It’d be hard to over-dose gas drops, it’s a med that is not absorbed by the body, it stays in the GI canal and comes out with the poop, so I too would give another dose before bed-time.

Perfect! I did just that last night before bed, she got two doses of simethicone. Stayed up longer than I intended to for my girl. And I just called the vet this morning and they said I did everything right, and as long as she’s eating and pooping, she’ll be ok. Just gonna have my hubby keep a very close eye on her while I’m at work for 5 hours.
It really is such a great feeling to see her acting normal again. I’m so thankful for the advice, thanks again!
