        Hi.

I have a 3 year old Netherland Dwarf called Fudge – she’s beautiful!

2 days ago (Wednesday 1st of June) I noticed quite a large lump on the right side of her face. I immediately called the vet who wanted to see me immediately. When I went in, she did a quick examination and told me it was a tooth abscess. Luckily, she was able to perform the surgery immediately.

The vet told me that she had 2 abscesses – one of her top right molars was loose and rotten at the base. The more concerning one was the lower right molar, where the abscess extending down to her lymph node – the vet told me that she removed as much as she could, even part of the lymph node…….. She said she wasn’t sure if she got it all though. Fudge was knocked out for over an hour while this all took place, which is a long time for bunnies, as the vet stressed. We weren’t sure if she would wake up at all. Luckily, Fudge has also been a stubborn little thing – she woke up and started hopping about the surgery room, as my vet said. She was so shaken up when I came to get her.

Since the surgery, Fudge has been not eating as much as she usually does – she used to inhale the hay I gave her. I’ve been giving her more soft, strong smelling vegetables just to get something moving through her gut. She also hasn’t been drinking as much water as she used to… She still eats some hay and drinks every now and again. I’m hoping that her appetite comes back.

She has been flopping a lot – I think out of pain/lack of energy than happy resting flop…

I’ve been given 3 things to give her via syringes:-

        2 anti-biotics – Sulfatrim, Baytril.

        1 pain-killer Metacam.

        So my questions:

Can anyone tell me how long Fudge will take to get back to her previous healthy shape?

Any advice on how to give her her medicine? At the moment, it’s a real battle to get her to sit still and take the medicine – the Sulfatrim tastes awful.

Can anyone share some good stories about post-op bunnies! I need some good stuff

By the way, I brought her back to the vets yesterday, and the vet said that it’s healing a lot better than she thought it would be. At the moment, Fudge is doing really well.

          Welcome Ciel and Fudge!
I apologise for my brief post, I’m at work (shhh…).

I’d just like to know what strength metacam fudge is getting? mg/ml – cat or dog type?

Are you able to feed her a recovery food like critical care or soften pellets with warm water so they swell up and form a mush?

Hello, and thanks for the welcome!

Fudge is on Metacam 1.5mg/ml – Meloxicam, 10ml.

Also, I made another thread about Fudge possibly in GI stasis – completely forgot I had this thread. From the looks of it, during the night, Fudge hasn’t touched her hay, pellets or water – she might have eaten and drank very little, I’m not sure. She did do a nervous poo when I was giving her her medication though… I’ve also seen her chew on her cardboard.

Is this something to be worried about?

Oh, and she’s on dog type.

Glad to hear she is on the dog strength metacam.

It’s possible the antibiotics effecting her appetite, or pain. So you will probably need to speak with your vet.
When I was medication a rabbit a few years ago for head tilt, I was doing each med (3) separately with some time inbetween. At a revist to the vet, she said she would have just been giving them all together in the one syringe. I didn’t realise it was okay to mix them..
So you might be able to do that. The metacam would make the sulfatrim more palatable and you’d only have to be handling her once.

I never knew I could mix the pain killer and anti biotics together – I was worried about some weird reaction taking place.

I’ll definitely be speaking to my vet about it. She’s definitely a lot more lethargic than she used to be…

Same. Definitely speak with vet if those particular meds can be mixed. I never actually did it as my rabbit was a gem about taking her meds.
