I have a dwarf/lionhead mix, a little over two years old named Daisy. I had her spayed this past Friday.
She had started to eat Sunday and had two small bowls of kale, dill and cilantro, however come Monday she stopped eating again!
I called my vet and brought her in first thing Tuesday morning where she was given fluids, metacam, and metoclopramide. I was sent home with a small bottle of cisapride in banana flavor.

Where things get very tricky is that even before her spay she has always been a VERY sassy picky bun, she loves pets on her own terms and will pick around her food. She’s not a fan of bananas, pumpkin, juice, strawberries, raspberries, basically anything that could help me administer her meds.
I brought her home from the vet at noon, and she had not eaten until I gave her the first dose of cisapride at 6 pm. It is now 7:30 and I’m still worrying.

I was insistent on bringing her in this morning because she has been loudly grinding her teeth off and on, before and after the appointment. I’ve been giving her her metacam regulary like instructed since her spay, which she unfortunately also hates, making it a real battle to check her tummy as well. I have also tried Critical Care in water, juice, pumpkin, she simply let’s it ooze out of her mouth. At the vet they attempted to give her Critical Care as well.

The only thing she will eat for sure is dried papaya, however this is very sugary so I don’t think I want to give her too much.

My vet has said she seems well, her incision is healing nicely, and she is alert and bopped around a bit. Despite having her metacam though she is still grinding her teeth. Is she annoyed? Asking for attention? I know grinding means pain but I have done everything I can think of to make her comfortable, It’s scary for me to think she may still be hurting

She has had GI stasis once before and recovered well from it, but I also think she has not been eating her cecals.

Has anyone else experienced such a fussy bun spay? She is my first rabbit and I just want to do everything I can for her. It’s really breaking my heart to hear her grind and refuse any food

Thanks to everyone for any tips or encouragement that can be offered!

The tooth grinding probably indicates pain, even though she is on Metacam. It’s possible that she has gas. You didn’t mention giving her simethicone. If you haven’t tried that yet, some infant simethicone may be very helpful to her, and it is harmless. You give 1 – 2 ml in a syringe every hour for 3 hours.

The other thing I wonder about is her teeth. Have they been checked out? The fact that she doesn’t want to eat many things plus the fact that it sounds like she is still in pain, could be indicative of teeth problems.

I listened to her tummy and felt it was very loud, so I did give her some simethicone drops.

My vet has said her teeth are in good condition.

When I woke up she had eaten some kale and dill, and a small piece of carrot out of the small spread I left out for her.

She seemed to be grinding her teeth less when I sat with her, and seemed to be in higher spirits this morning, though she was still very resistant to taking her medicine.

Thankfully she has been lightly nibbling on hay.

This morning there was also lots of little bunny poos in her little box! I was so excited! They’re a little small and irregular but it seems like a good sign.

Thanks so much for your thoughts!

I’m glad that Daisy has started eating and pooping again! I hope that she keeps that up and feels completely well soon.
