So I am a first time bunny owner and my new bunny Madeline (french lop) has one ear that is warm and the other ear is cold. Is this normal? Does it mean that she could possibly have some sort of ear infection? She is acting just fine shes eating and drinking normally and shes very very active. I dont see anything really wrong with her but I have noticed that one ear is warmer than the other. Does anyone have experience with this? I know rabbits control their temperature through their ears, but I thought it was weird that the ears were not the same temperature. Should we be taking her to the vet?

If she has one ear up and one close against her body, they will be different temps, if she has been lying one side in the sun ditto?

It sounds a bit odd, but if she had an infection she’d likely show other symptoms, like redness, efforts at scratching her ear, frequent head-shaking or even sneezing (a lot). How does the skin inside the ears look?

Everything looks normal. I have heard her sneeze a few times but not a ton. She does not have a runny nose or anything. But I am kind of concerned that I have heard her sneeze a few times and now her ear is hot and been that way for 2 days.

Sometimes an ear infection isn’t immediately obvious. I would be concerned if the ear has been consistently warm for a few days and the other has not. It’s probably worth having a vet check it out. They can look deep inside the ear.

A comment from a non-expert.  I think bunny ears are major heat exchangers for their bodies.  The three rabbits I’ve owned haven’t had  hardly any hair on their ears.  I think they (non-lops) hold their ears up for cooling and down against their body when it’s cold. I often grasp my bunnies ears…surprisingly this does not seem to bother them.  I grasp their ears to feel their temperature.  After eating, their ears are warm.  If they haven’t eaten for a while, the ears are room temperature (cold). I’ve never experienced a one ear is hot and one ear cold situation.  I would think the cold ear is not experiencing full blood circulation for whatever reason.  At this juncture, I’m not competent to say more.

When I got home yesterday both ears were warm and seemed to be normal. I think I am going to be taking her in for a check up anyways because I was told by the previous owner that she has never had one. I have noticed that she seems to be “chewing” something but nothing is really in her mouth. I hear some minor clicking as she does this… I dont know if it is grinding or not. I have never had a rabbit before so I have never heard the difference between grinding and purring. I checked her front teeth and they look wonderful and she does not have a runny nose. But I am going to be safe and take her in hopefully today. I am a bit nervous about our vets here, they say that they have seen rabbits a few times but its not very common. I might be driving an hour to a vet that specializes in rabbits. Rabbits are a lot of work, but definitely worth it in my eyes!
