I just picked up three two and a half year old buns (born 2/4/16) on Tuesday evening and have been attempting to litter box train them. I was unaware that this may not be possible until they reach maturity and are spayed? Suggestions at this point in regards to housing until then since I now have two litter boxes available at all times with fresh alfalfa with care fresh for them. They consistently spray the walls with their urine and the smell is quite pungent.  Would changing their location to a smaller one perhaps help/urge them to litter box train faster for a few days? Washing down their space two to three times a day so far but still having the entire house smell is worrisome. I want to be the best bunny owner but make sure they are happy as well. I called the vet that was suggested in the area and they will do the procedure at 6 months. And that is quite some time away. Suggestions for those that have brought home young buns? They are two lion heads and one holland lop. Absolutely precious.

Welcome to BinkyBunny. So you have three 2 1/2 YEAR old or MONTH old? Since you mentioned something about reaching maturity, and alfalfa, it leads me to believe year was a typo and you meant months? Unpayed/unnuetered bunnies’ urine (especially males) can be VERY pungent.

How big is their space right now? If they are actually only 2 1/2 months, it can be tricky — messy and icky as they reach their sexual maturity. Check out this BinkyBunny article, https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO…fault.aspx,

on how do deal with a hormonal bunny behaviors while you wait for surgery. (scroll toward bottom)

Males can be done sooner — as soon as the testicles drop. Important to find a rabbit savvy vet.

Also, are they for SURE all the same sex? You don’t want to deal with even more bunnies (plus it would be hard on a female to become pregnant early)
If so, you may need to separate very soon.

2 1/2 months old – sorry for the typo. And I went to the House Rabbit Society in San Diego over the weekend and discovered that one of the bunnies is a boy. So I have an appointment for Friday to go get him looked at. He is now in his own little area. Poor little guy. Everyone has surprisingly been a bit more tidy since he has been separated so I am wondering if it has to do with the hormones…
