I have had my rabbit Lulu for little more than a year now, he is the furry light of my life. I got him in the hope that he could provide me with the companionship and comfort that a therapy animal could provide for my mental disorders. A year later, my husband and I have come to the decision that the traits I was looking for in a support animal would only be found in a dog and that it would be necessary to get one in the near future. Lulu is neutered and now he has lived with a female companion rabbit, named Honeybun, with people issues for three months and she seems to make him happy although we still haven’t been able to bond with her yet despite many hours spent on the floor with her offering treats and love. I am concerned about getting a dog with the small space we have available in our one bedroom apartment. The rabbits have free reign of our bunnyproof bedroom and while Lulu could stand his own ground, Honey would likely never adjust to having a dog around. With the addition of a dog being inevitable, do you guys have any suggestions of what to do for our rabbits? Would it be better to attempt to rehome Honey after she is spayed? Lulu’s first companion passed away within three months of us getting her and he didn’t seem upset in the slightest. It would kill me to part with Lulu, but I do want to do what would be best for him in the long run.

May i ask what traits you need in a support animal? I ask because i trained my bunny Blue to be my ESA and hes very helpful in many situations. He knows how to wake me up when i pass out, for example

With that, i dont see why you cant keep the buns and get a pup. You can get a dog thats naturally calm. A small dog would be good too, and youll want a dog that doesnt have a big prey drive. You can keep the buns in their room and put up a baby gate to keep the dog out. After the dog is settled in and the bunnies are ok with its presence, you can allow them to meet nose to nose at the gate. After everyone is comfortable again, you can take one bunny out at a time for the pup to sniff, then put the bun back and pet it so it knows its safe. You can find a few websites on google about introducing bunnies and other animals
