Day four of having Harlow and i do believe she just threw a temper tantrum? if bunnies even do this? lol.

She’s been out of her cage most of the day today. When she hopped into her cage i closed it a few times so i could do what i need to do around the house for a bit but eventually id open it back up and let her hop around some more while i laid on the floor watching her doing my homework.
Each night i’ve had her i move her cage by my door to block off my bookshelf and other boxes of things i have in my room, lay out the blankets and toys on the floor, lay down blocking the other half of the room and open her cage letting her out. When it’s time for her to get “put up” for the night, i’ll close the cage door whenever she decides to go in there and start picking everything up (toys, poops, blankets) and i think she has started to catch on to this little routine.

Tonight as i started picking up her poops, she’d nudge past me and get out when i opened her cage door to put them in her little pathetic litter box i gave her for now. After a few times of this, i blocked her way and kept her in. But she got so mad at me! She flipped her litter box, started making a grunting noise and started biting and digging at the door of her cage for the first time. it’s obvious she wanted back out but she’s never done this? I got a hold of a vet earlier today that is surprisingly right around the corner from my house to talk about setting an appointment up for her to get checked out and eventually spayed. She’s literally the sweetest bunny, loves to cuddle, no longer struggles being picked up at all, totally great. But she started humping my cat, and lifting her butt in the air every time your hand goes near her butt so i’m assuming it’s time for her to get spayed.

i guess my question is, will spaying her help this behavior or do bunnies throw tantrums? She’s still digging at the cage to get out. But it’s the grunting and flipping things and throwing things around that caught me off guard. lol. She’s been so sweet and calm, but it’s apparent she did not want to go back into her cage just then lol.

Also a side note, not trying to make a long post even longer, but as i was putting her blankets away i felt a wet spot on one of them. When i looked closer it was this white sticky texture. i know they sometimes have calcium(?) i think in their urine but was wondering if this would be it? i didn’t think it would actually leave behind a sticky substance, just thought it was apart of the urine.

How old is Harlow? Is she going through puberty? This is a temper tantrum and she is trying to train you to do what she wants.

The 2nd year of an unspayed bunny’s life is craziness. Especially the girls.

If she is at that age it is like having a teenager who wants to stay out until 2 am.

Spayed or not they mellow with age but you must have her spayed no later than 5 years.

Harlow is still a baby, but since I brought her home Sunday she’s showing signs that she should probably be spayed. Hopefully we will be able to do this within the next few weeks, but only time will tell.

It was so ridiculous though! I felt like i was watching a three year old be told “no” for the first time. I could practically sense her scoffing and me and rolling her eyes once she calmed down and sat in her litter box glaring at me across the room! Lol Hopefully there wont be too many more tantrums in her future. And hopefully she wont hold any grudges.

I would have never thought that such a small thing could have such a huge personality lol.
As an actress, i’m going to have to say that after tonight, Harlow might be the biggest drama queen i’ve met haha.

Consider getting her a bigger cage having a hutch area with an attached run. These are usually sold as chicken coops for outside use. I use them indoors and put carpeting on top to double as a cat tower.

Spraying probably would help but maybe just giving her a large area where she can come and go would be more effective. When she gets tired of being out she’ll go back “home”. I don’t feed my rabbits their daily greens until they voluntarily retire to their cages.

BTW when rabbit urine dries it often can be white.

The cage she has right now is one of the larger pet store cages. We’re only using it for her for the time being. I will be making a big C&C cage so she can have the entire corner to herself. I’ve been doing my best to keep her out as much as possible because i know her cage is smaller than it should be, and plan on getting an x pen to set up for her because unfortunately i cannot rabbit proof my bedroom and give her free range, but setting up that pen for her will give her most of the floor space, more than what she’s getting now.

Harlow decided to thump at me when i was on my phone this morning because she knew i was awake and wanted attention lol.

LOL – yes welcome to the life of temper tantrums, especially if hungry, or bored or both. LOL
It sounds as if she’s a lucky run free bunny most of the time. Mine flips her big ceramic plate dish when she’s not impressed…. that’s some power in a bun’s jaws to be able to do that…..!
Atleast they don’t cry and wail and thump like a “terrible two” year old !!! LOL

Both my girls were spayed around six months ago, and I would guess are a year old now, and we often get these kind of ‘let me out to play tantrums’ from them, and also from our two year old boy. In their eyes, its just not right to be shut in, and all three have plenty of space when they are in their runs.

Pippi is two, and can thump as well as any other terrible two, VBF, and I doubt he’s the only bun who can and does

In the summer, he does this at night, demanding to be let in the garden, as he way prefers to do his business outside

Too funny. i just got back from class and it seems Harlow is still holding a grudge. She’ll get her floor time here in a minute once i get all situated.

I had no idea bunnies threw tantrums. I thought it was pretty funny this morning when i woke up and was playing on my phone with the lights still off. She knew I was up and kept thumping at me until i got up and turned the lights on and pet her. Apparently bunnies are the best alarms.

Bunnies are like cats, they truly believe we humans exist solely to do their bidding

I don’t know about anyone else, but I find bunny tantrums to be absolutely adorable. It certainly sounds like Harlow had one

Bandit didn’t have tantrums often, mainly only if I was late with his breakfast

I know this post is over a week old, but I had to chime in. We always call our bun “the little drama queen”. We’ve learned that we better not introduce her to something unless we intend to allow her to do it from that point on. We live in a two story house, and she has free range of the first floor. Today, we allowed her to come upstairs for the very first time, and she enjoyed it so much, she even turned down treats in order to keep playing upstairs. Tonight, when it was time for us to settle in, I confined her back to the first floor, and she was not happy about it.

Mine are all neutered and intermittently throw ‘tantrums’. The angry wee is the worst.

But they’ve calmed down overall since neutering.
