I have barely ever seen Blue sleeping. He does flop sometimes, but that’s it. Is this normal?

        He’s a 5-pound NZB (8 months old) with the cutest brown-yellow paws.

Do you see his nose twitching? When their nose don’t twitch I hear that’s when they are sleeping. Sometimes when my bunny sleeps with her eyes open that’s how I can tell if she’s sleeping or not. If may be because he is sleeping with his eyes open.

He just is constantly moving or loafed.

Bunnies can sleep with their eyes open. They have a translucent third eyelid that protects the eye from drying up. Bunnies often sleep in the loaf-position and since their eyes are open, they look like they’re awake

He moves his head around and twitches his nose with varying speeds.

My sister’s dwarf rabbit always slept in a loaf position but mine usually just full on sleeps on her side with her eyes closed. With her head down to the side and all. My bunny only usually runs around in the mornings and a little before I go to bed but she prefers to be just flop and relax. Lol I think I have a lazy bunny!

Just to be clear, I am 99 percent sure he is not asleep!

He must sleep, I love Blue, all mammals including humans must sleep or they die. It’s ok to not have dream-sleep, but deep sleep (stage 4 and 5) is essential for survival. How much a bun needs to sleep is individual though and varies with age and activity level.

It can appear as if a bun doesn’t sleep though esp if you crinkle a treat bag in the same room, buns hear treat-bags very well and come running to get their share.

I never saw my Bam close his eyes until the day he came home after his neuter and was all drowsy after the anesthesia. He loafs with his eyes open when he sleeps. My other bun sleeps with his eyes closed and often flopped out. So buns are all different!

Wooly has gotten into the habit of sleeping with his eyes open when the lights are on. Creeps me out every time because he will often slump to one side (after falling asleep in a loaf position) and his pupil with be constricted from the light shining. Agh!

I agree with Bam. He must be sleeping at some point. Bunnies are prey animals, so they are able to sleep lightly and they may not even appear as though they are asleep.

Maybe he has adjusted his schedule to fit yours, and sleeps at the same time you do, or while you are at work/school.

Maybe as soon as Blue hears you coming (footsteps, floors creaking, etc.) he wakes up? I know my bunny is a super light sleeper. Especially when she hears her alfalfa hay bag being opened.. No matter how hard she has crashed sleeping she jumps up full alert attempting to hop into the bag. When she sleeps her nose does twitch on and off. You can try watching Blue and I’m sure you can catch him sleeping. Watch his nose.

Rabbits are crepuscular meaning they are most active around dusk and dawn. My bunnies usually sleep deepest in the afternoon. Not so sure about there night sleep habits but I assume they sleep some then as well.

StachesMommy – I have that same problem, but it’s when they are being cute. They are doing something incredibly adorable so I reach for the camera…… and they immediately stop what they were doing and stare. *sigh*

But yes, you have a good point. Perhaps he is popping up every time he hears someone approaching.
