Hello, we will be adopting a bun in about 3 weeks, and so we are starting to look at what we want to do for housing.  There’s 3 buns we’re considering, of the 3, two are about 5 pounds, and one is 3 pounds, so none of them are very large. With that said, I want to make sure we’re still supplying whatever bun we get with enough space.

DH and i decided we’d like to do more of a hutch type, or re purposed furniture, we want to avoid a dog crate, simply because it looks too much like a cage for us, we’d like something that will blend in with our home/furniture more.

We’d like to build something like this:

        http://www.therabbithouse.com/indoor/cupboard-hutch.asp

        http://codfishhouse.com/category/projects/

I’ve found a couple of different ikea cabinets that should give bunny more than enough room inside.

My question is, when making something like this, as a person new to bunnies, what things do I need to watch out for, and take into consideration to keep bunny safe?

We will put linoleum or something down on the floor, to help with water spills, and I’ll supply a couple of small rugs for bunnies feet. As far as the hole between the two cabinets (we’ll make sure aren’t too rigid), and the wiring on the front of the doors (is there anything I should/shouldn’t use here?, is there any specific material I should try to get, or try to avoid?

Any other tips when making something like this?

        Thanks!

You would have to make sure that the wood hasn’t been treated with anything toxic, if you plan on painting or staining the wood it would have to be something nontoxic/eatable as well.

It is a nice idea to have something like this to blend in with your furniture. But you have to keep in mind, rabbits are chewers, they love to chew wood. You might get lucky and end up with a bunny that isn’t a big chewer, but a lot of them are (if not most). So you might put a lot of work and effort into building something nice like this, only to have it chewed up in a few months time. We have a wooden hutch for our rabbit, we’ve had it for many years and it’s still usable, but it’s very obvious that it has seen better days. If you can live with that, then go for it! But if you’re concerned with how it will look, maybe go for something more durable, like a NIC cage or x-pen. Those won’t look as fancy of course.

Good point about chewing, the spots I can think of that would be a obvious
chew hazard would be the arched openings we’d be cutting between the spaces.  Would they chew other areas?

Also, I found a used hutch that I think would work well, dimensions are 47″ long, 16″
deep, and 29 1/2″ tall, would this be big enough for  3-4 pound rabbit? We would
put a shelf on one side, which would cut the 29 1/2″ tall part in 1/2, but only
on the side where that shelf is, the other side would be the full height.  And bunny would have lots of time outside of this hutch as well every day.
