I was thinking of making Tenzin a digging box. Just buying the same sort of litter pan we use for my cat and giving him something he can dig in possibly even hide things in there to forage for. But I have a couple questions.

What should I put in the box? Like what sort of ” substrate” ?

Also he is very well litter trained. what are the chances he will try using it as an actual litter box?

My bunnies make a mess with a litterbox digging box! To let them have digging fun, I made them a digging box out of a cardboard box. The box is 24″ x 14 or 16″, top flaps folded inward but not closed, two doorways just large enough for them to get in and out. I got a doodle pad (unprinted newsprint) and tore the paper up, balled it up, cut up cardboard shapes, and tossed all that in the box. The balled up paper is about 3 inches deep in the box (comes to the bottom of the doorway cutouts). They love it. Marlee like to burrow in it and Moshi likes to dig and toss the paper around. They invariably drag a little paper out but its easy to just toss it back in the box.

Do you think I could do something similar with an extra deep covered cat litter pan? I worry about them somehow getting through the box and destroying the carpet protector.

They might. Most bunnies seem to prefer two doorways so they always have an escape route. With balled up paper, you wouldn’t really need to cover it because its easy to clean up. I did cut a piece of cardboard to put as a second layer in the bottom of the box because Marlee found the bottom flaps and was tearing them up (can’t use tape)

The top wasn’t so much as a guard to keep from getting dirty. More so its different from their normal litter pans … hopefully detering the use of it as a litter box.

The bunny will ultimately decide whether it is a litterbox or not. The M&Ms have never left a single poop in their digging box, and Kieko has 2 litterboxes (literally litterboxes with litter in them) that she only sleeps in. Kieko will, however, pee and poop in a cheap cloth hidey/play cube I bought. All you can do is give it a try and see what the bunny decides.
