I’m not totally sure if this is the right place to post this and I’m sorry if not but I just have a quick question- I’m looking for a bunny safe waterproofer for an outdoor hutch & run I’m building for my bunny to enjoy summer mornings and evenings outside with me. I’ve checked Home Hardware but there was nothing non toxic /:

Thanks TheInsaneHyena, I was looking at that site last night but unfortunately from what I can tell the only clear ones they mention seem to be exclusive to the UK.. I should have mentioned- I am in Canada

Isn’t shellac supposed to be bunny-safe? The regular kind.

I wonder if soy paint would be ok?

I can’t remember how I found out…. I think I may have gotten on some manly chat group and asked the experts, but I believe many of those stains and such are non-toxic over time. And if it’s not right on where they’ll be possibly chewing anyway, I wouldn’t worry too much. But you may want to get on one of those chat rooms full of guys who actually know this stuff. Sorry I can’t remember. You might find someone at a paint store who actually knows. I just seem to recall the last time I was doing that, I didn’t have to buy anything in particular. Of course, after all that worry, the rabbits didn’t chew a thing anyway! Sorry. I know this sounds all lax and irresponsible, but I really haven’t had a problem. I’d call a paint store. If you get the right person, you may get a really quick answer.

Megabunny – Well, I suppose it can’t be any worse than bunnies chewing on drywall. o_O

I ate some candy today and noticed shellac was on of the ingredients. Pretty tasty stuff.

Yes, it’s used to put a “glaze” on certain candies. Shellac comes from a bug, so I guess you could say it’s natural. LOL

Whoops, sorry guys I completely forgot that I posted this!
I ended up using a 3:1 mixture of coconut oil and beeswax and rubbing it onto the wood, then wiping off the excess, as I wanted to keep things as natural as possible. It was lots of work lol and so very messy but it repels water amazingly so far and now everything smells like yummy coconuts!.. Hopefully that doesn’t entice Juniper too much once we put everything together lol. I will definitely take note of all of your answers for future reference though, thanks all!

Haha yep, next we’re planning to build her a customized cage attached by a pvc tube to a run behind the couch for more room to play in her cage!
I love to DIY and I love my bunny, so, why not DIY for my bunny? lol <3
