Hello lovely bunny parents!  I have a question for you all: what sort of flea & tick shampoo/spray do you use on your bunnies (if any at all)?  I realize this is a predominantly house rabbit society, however my rabbit IS mostly a house rabbit.  He goes outside regularly in his “run” and I sit with him and read a book while he runs around and munches grass and has a fabulous time.  We’ve recently had a lot of rain in my part of the country and I think that’s how he picked them up.  I grew up in the desert and was ignorant about ticks and fleas – these were pests our dogs got if we took them to a swamp or a river – they didn’t live in our backyard.  I cleaned his area well and can use diatomaceous earth in his play area (while he’s not there), but what do I use on him?

Have any of you used shampoo or sprays before on your rabbits?  Is there a DIY solution I can make?  I have exhausted all of the “pet stores” and “vet supplies” and “pet supply stores” in my area and may have to wait until I drive out of town (2+ hours) to get to the store to get professional solutions.  I could also order something online.  I’m very reluctant to use anything NOT specific to rabbits.

Thanks guys and here’s hoping I get some suggestions on a solution to use.

Okay, I did some sleuthing – I had no idea so many house bunnies got fleas!  I will vacuum once more and see if Wal-Mart has Advantage and treat Mr. Pasternak (that’s the only store I have yet to try).  He’ll probably hate it, but thank me later because I bet he’ll feel a lot better after the fleas DIE.  Mwahahahaha.  If anyone DOES still have further suggestions, I’d love to hear them.  I’m going to get started on sprinkling the diatomaceous earth around tomorrow, or this evening if the store is still open.

Advantage small cat, ferret and rabbit is ok but I am not sure on the dosage. I always use Revolution Puppy and kitten. Be very careful with any others as they can be toxic. NEVER USE FRONTLINE.

Thanks very much Roberta – I read that Frontline was a NO GO for rabbits.  I wasn’t going to try anything before talking with a vet first, but it looks like Advantage (small cat) would be reasonable and I should be able to find it where I live.
