So I bought a bag of wood pellets labeled “100% natural, no additives”. It doesn’t say anything about accelerant. Would this means it’s safe to use? It does say not for animal or human consumption.
The brand is North Country sold at Rona, anyone else use this brand?

I use a similar kind it’s called pennywise. I’ve not had any problems I like it. It is cheaper than rabbit litter. I can get a 50lb bag for $5 as long as your rabbits don’t eat it, it should be fine.

Thanks! I was just worried because it say “high btu”. I thought maybe that meant there was something on it.

What kind of wood is it?
You want to be careful to avoid the aromatic kinds because it can be dangerous. Here’s a detailed article that you might find helpful:
                http://www.rabbit.org/journal/1/liver-disease.html

I tried like 5 different litters before landing on “Good Mews” cat litter which is made from recycled compressed newspaper. Hardly any dust, absorbs urine well, is easy to compost, and is made from recycled materials. So if you find your wood pellets are the bad kind that’s my recommendation! But hopefully what you have is working.

I use wood stove pellets, no additives, different brands all the time because wood stove pellets here always come in different brands it seems. They all cost the same, probably because those that use them in stoves buy it in bulk and even the slightest change in price would make a big difference. It can be bought here all year round, which isn’t always possible in regions with warmer climate.

I’ve used a type of recycled newspaper-litter too, and it was very good but pricey and I had to go a considerable distance out of town to buy it.

The bag says “soft wood”. I even contact the makers and they said they have many customers that use it as litter. He even explained how it was made and that nothing additional was added to the wood.
And it works perfectly!! I can’t smell anything at all. Not even the wood. It puffs up into sawdust and it easy to remove daily. Although, they didn’t like standing on the pellets at 1st, they are adjusting and haven’t stopped using the litter box.
Thanks, Tana for the article!! I think the soft wood is ok and they aren’t in a enclosure with the litter box, they are free range so I think that helps too.

My husband says soft wood pellets is most likely Pine or cotton wood. Those are both considered soft woods. Other soft woods are poplar, cedar, willow. I’ve heard of wood pellets for litter, but have never seen or used them before. We use aspen wood bedding. Pepper seems to like it, and i don’t notice a bad urine odor when he uses it.
