        Hi everyonee ,

I’ve recently joined this forum because of the helpfulness and good advice from this bunny community, and so I myself have a question about the diet of a young bunny as I am getting one well, not soon so but in march (just wanna be prepared aha).

I live in Australia and its really hard for me to get lucerne (also known as alfalfa) hay here. There is a farm that sells it at a very reasonable price but its way too far and inconvenient for me to get it, so I was wondering if its okay to just feed my baby bun oaten hay. I’m scared it might affect his growth etc. The breeder feeds her baby bunnies rabbit pellets, oaten chaff and lucerne chaff, so is it ok if i slowly transition him to my rabbit pellets and just oaten hay?

        ooh another question;

how much pellets do I feed him?

(btw he will be about 8 weeks when I get him ♡)

         Thank youu in advancee x

Are you able to get young rabbit pellets (alfalfa-based)?

Yes, I’ve found these alfalfa based ones that people have recommended

As long as your bunny is getting a young rabbit formula pellet, then the type of hay doesn’t matter. You could use timothy, oat, orchard, or any other grass hay.

Can I ask what brand of pellets they are? You want to make sure they are plain pellets. No seeds or junk in it.

I’ve never heard of those pellets, so I looked up the nutrition information.

                  Ingredients include:

Wheaten bran and pollard, Lupins, Barley, Lucerne (5%), Clover, Lignin, Canola, Triticale, Lentils, Oats, Peas, Beans, Soya, Sunflower, Grape and products derived from those ingredients, Bentonite, Limestone, Dicalcium phosphate, Salt, Vitamins and Minerals.

                  Nutritional Analysis:

                  Min Crude Protein 17.0%
                  Min Crude Fibre 15.0%
                  Min Crude Fat 3.0%
                  Max Crude Salt (NaCl) 1.0%
                  Max Calcium 1.1%
                  Min Phosphorus 0.5%

Wheat bran is the first ingredient. That’s not good. You want to look for something that has Alfalfa meal listed as the first ingredient. Are you able to get Oxbow there?

If you absolutely do not have access to alfalfa hay or pellets, you can safely feed quality timothy based pellets and grass hay from 8 weeks old. It’s recommended that they have some alfalfa in the early months, but it’s not an absolute requirement for health.

I have two bunnies, and the 10lb bag of oxbow lasts me at least 3 or four months. I give them 1/8 cup a day, but for babies you can feel unlimited.
I know several Aussies on here who feed Oxbow, so do check pet stores.

oh back to this topic aha but how much should I feed my rabbit, for babies and adults?

When they are young, you can feed them “unlimited” everything. When I say unlimited, it really just means what they will eat. Once they stop growing (6 months for small breeds, a little older for large breeds) then you want to feed them the amount of pellets recommended for their weight. If you’re using Oxbow, the feeding recommendations are on the side of the bag, but generally it’s 1/8 to 1/4 a cup per day. Some people will feed less if they are making it up with lots of veggies. Hay will remain unlimited as they become an adult. You will want to transition to timothy-based pellets and a grass hay at that time though too.

oh, I thought some people restrict the pellet amount even for a baby. Can you actually do that tho

You can if their diet is causing digestive issues. General recommendation though is to give them what they will eat because they are still growing.
