        Hi everyone,

My rabbit is litter trained (always goes in litter box). I have recently moved the majority of her hay to the litter box as she eats loads more when it is there. There is a hay dispenser, but a lot of the hay is in a big pile as she likes to dig in it and flop next to eat and have a long eating session.

My question is, sometimes she will get on top of the hay and rest of top of the pile. Sometimes she will wee on top of the hay. Is this bad for her if she ate some of the hay she went to the toilet on? I am reluctant to pick her up and move her when she is doing it as we are making so much progress with handling at the moment and I don’t want to interrupt this.

        Thanks in advance!

It wouldn’t necessarily kill them, but I certainly don’t think it’s good. You should always replace soiled hay with fresh clean hay. Maybe you could provide a second box full of hay for her to just eat.

I’m having this problem too. She likes to climb directly onto the pile, and pee and poop there. I thought maybe it was just the corner, but I moved her litterbox to that corner, and she still goes on the hay pile. That’s actually the place she goes the most, I’m wondering if the people who had her before me had hay as her bedding, because there’s maybe ten poos all over the rest of the cage, total, and only one wee spot. The rest is on her hay. I’ve thought about the box thing, but she’s only about 8 weeks old, and I’ve heard she shouldnt be chewing cardboard yet.

Rabbits like to use the restroom when they eat, especially it seems when eating hay. I’ve had to come to the realization that a good portion of the hay that I put out for my two rabbits is going to get throw out because they’ve soiled it. I tried putting in a hay dispenser next to their litter box but they didn’t seem that interested in it and wanted free access to the hay. Fresh hay should be given to rabbits several times a day, so maybe try giving your rabbit enough to last them to the next feeding (like when you come home from work), and if the remaining hay is dirty, toss it out, and give fresh hay.
