My bunny Jessica has a terrible smelling cage. This is the bunny that was unexpectedly dumped on me about a week ago by a friend who had her living in a 10 gallon fish aquarium. Currently, she is still inside that aquarium until tomorrow when I get my paycheck. I already have a nice 4 foot long rabbit deluxe rabbit cage on hold for her at the store.

I’m pretty sure the smell is so bad because it’s such a tiny glass aquarium with a screen lid on top and really the odor has no place to go.

Though I’d like to know if there is any type of natural home ingredients I can use to clean her cage like the vinegar/lemon/water solution I use on my bearded dragon terrarium. Or something similar like baking soda?

What can I use that is natural for her fur to smell fresh? She doesn’t really smell that bad herself but I do like to make her smell wonderful and be groomed nicely. Also what can I use for a nice fresh smelling bedding? My friend only had her on timothy hay so that is what she is currently on. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. It’s just been so long since I owned a bunny!

A vinegar/water solution is fine for cleaning rabbit cages. Since lemon is a natural substance, I think that would be safe too. I add a squirt of a natural dish detergent, like Seventh Generation to my vinegar and water solution.

I think that once you get your bunny out of that aquarium, she will smell better. Daily combing and or brushing to get rid of loose fur is all that she should need. I don’t think that there is any product that you could safely use on her to make her smell better. That should come with time.

You shouldn’t use bedding throughout the cage. That confuses them if you are trying to litter box train them. There should just be litter/bedding in the litter box. For the litter box you can use compressed paper pellets, compressed pine or aspen pellets or hay or straw, or a combination – some type of litter on the bottom of the box, with hay covering it.

Now that you mention it I do remember only having litter/bedding inside one of my first rabbit’s litter box. I believe I used compressed paper pellets and tossed in some hay.

Thank you for that little reminder I had forgotten.
