        hi guys!!!!

sooooo my male jersey wooly is 6 months old and just got fixed.  i understand that he is allowed to eat alfalfa until he is one. HOWEVER, that is ALL he will eat.  he refuses ANY hay/grass that I’ve offered and will barely touch his pellets…EVEN fresh veggies…he gives me a “are you trying to poison me mom” look…I tired mixing in Oxbows : orchard, oat, timothy and botanical with his alfalfa(Oxbow).   and he would just eat around it, no matter how well i (thought) mixed it.  So then i decided after talking to a bunny breeder, to just go cold turkey and take away the alfalfa. and i gave him timothy……didn’t touch it. then i gave him oat and orchard…..again didn’t touch it.  This went on for about three full days and i realized that he was literally starving himself….no joke people.  the hay remained in the same pot virtually untouched. and the pellets that he RARELY ate slowly started disappeared.  the minute i brought out the alfalfa bag he came running and was climbing up my leg for it. i felt like a terrible mom. he sat in his box and munched for a good five minutes before crawling into my lap to take a nap.

i understand alfalfa is ok for the first year of life. but what the heck am i going to do when he’s older. i don’t want to feed him food that isn’t nutritionally good for him, but i don’t want him to starve…..everyone says i have the weirdest and pickiest bunny on the planet. i mean he won’t even go for a fresh little shred of an organic carrot….HELP ME PLEASE PEOPLE

What kind of veggies have you tried?

I’m still new to bunny keeping but mine doesn’t really like carrot that much either. She loves kale and mint so maybe try those?

The pellets she also doesn’t like that much, but she will eat enough of them. I just left them there for a few days and threw some in with her hay. I also tried hand feeding the pellets after covering them in some banana. Not sure if it helped but she eats pellets now.

As for the timothy hay, I think you’re supposed to gradually switch them. I give mine unlimited of both. She seems to really like the leafy/fluffy stick parts of the timothy hay if that makes sense.

I would try more veggies. Sometimes it seems like a waste when you buy veggies and they end up not liking as mine doesn’t like carrots (though likes the tops), courgette and beetroot. But you just have to keep trying. I find the leafy stuff is good like watercress, kale and rocket. Have you tried giving any sweet treats like banana, pear or nectarine just to get other foods started that aren’t hay once or twice a week?

don’t give up. thats my best advice. My bunny was picky too. She wouldn’t eat the plain oxbow pellets and she would eat the timothy hay. I had to slowly transition her and I kept exposing her to new foods. Eventually she came around. You can’t give up. Don’t go crazy buying the stuff obviously. Buy a little in case she doesn’t like it but keep at it
