        I went to a new pet store today and decided to explore it. They told me they keep hay as well (not many pet stores here keep hay), so I bought two packets because the price was pretty reasonable. I asked them what kind of hay it is, but they didn’t know. They said “The Indian Kind”  My parents say its wheat and it looks like one too, comparing from Google Images.

        However, I am wondering if it could be straw and not hay.

        Here’s a picture from my not-so-good phone camera :

        Can anyone help me identify if this straw or hay ? (They chopped it into a million pieces ).

        I didn’t really get this to feed her. I will continue to bring timothy hay as usual. I brought this to use it inside her litter box. Even if its straw, using it inside the litter box wont do any harm, will it ?

          That looks like straw to me. Sometimes it can be hard to tell in a picture. Straw can be used in the litter box and for bedding as long as it’s fresh and dry. It is safe for rabbits to nibble on if they choose to. We use straw for bedding at the rabbit sanctuary where I volunteer.

          Besides being a yellow/beige color, straw is more slick than hay, almost like it has a coating. Straw will have seed heads in it, but they are different looking from the seed heads on Timothy hay.

            That looks like chaff to me, which is chopped straw. I suspect your bun will eat it if you use it for litter.

              I agree, it looks like straw. The only problem with straw is it does not have the nutrients etc buns need, but it should be fine in the litter tray.

                @tobyluv : Yes, it looks slick as if it has a coating. That confirms it.

                : Chaff ! Yes, Googled it and compared. It is chaff.

                @Roberta
                : I read at HRS that though straw has more fiber, it has very low protein and calcium content. I’ll be using it inside her litter box (we get only Sunseed Pine Bedding here and I can get Back to Nature from amazon.in, but is VERY expensive). Better to use this than pine beddings. I’ll be getting a packet of timothy hay for her to eat, as usual.
