Near me there is a butcher shop which houses poultry and other animals. One of those animals are rabbits. Would it be okay for me to rescue a rabbit from there? Keep in mind I have never had a rabbit, I know the obvious like to neuter and stuff. Also, what I would like to do is once I get one from the butcher shop get a rabbit of the same sex from a Rabbitry would that work? How could I make sure they get along?

Definitely would be fine to adopt a rabbit from there! Why don’t you get both from the same place though? I think in any event if this is your first rabbit just get one for now so you can learn how they are and then get him/her spayed or neutered and then decide on the second rabbit.

I thought rabbits needed to be housed together, and I kind of wanted one from a breeder so at least one of the rabbits would have exposure to human contact.

You don’t house unaltered rabbits together and honestly even coming from a breeder doesn’t mean that rabbit has much exposure to human’s either.

I truly would advise you to get just one rabbit for now so you can learn what it is like to care for a rabbit and then if you want to venture out and get another rabbit to bond perhaps consider a rabbit rescue for the second rabbit.

I wouldn’t want to worry about a pregnant rabbit though, how would I check gender and if pregnant. Also, for choosing the rabbit what would I choose based off of? Looks? I know that may seem shallow but the place is full of rabbits.

I agree with Sarita. Also about breeders not always giving their rabbits the attention they deserve. Some *but not all* only care about the money. My bun (Moxie) was adopted from a breeder. She was housed outside with minimal human interaction. It’s a roll of the dice with breeders. But don’t get me wrong, some breeders are fantastic and genuinely care about their rabbits and the breed they are working with.
Also, since this would be your first bun, I would start with one for now definitely. When I picked out my Moxie I felt like it might be nice to get her a friend. I’m glad I didn’t, because It would have been too much to learn for a first time bunny parent. It would have been overwhelming.
A single rabbit can have a very happy life and a close relationship with their owner. It is not a necescity to have more than one.

I would (personally) decided gender, than the temperament of the bun, then lastly coloration ect. Or find good temperament buns, then gender then color. Maybe a bun in particular will just “speak” to you.
I wish you TONS of luck!

There is no for-certain way to determine if a bunny is pregnant without the help of the vet. If you want to adopt from this shop, I would advise you go with a male just to eliminate any possible pregnancy. As long as the bunnies are not very young, it is pretty easy to tell the gender, I advise you do a bit of research on how to determine gender before going to pick out your bunny.
I agree that it would be best to start with one bunny. Get them neutered, and bond with them a bit more before deciding on a second. If, at that point, you want another bunny, I would recommend you take your bunny dating at a rescue to let them pick out their own friend.
As far as choosing a bunny, I have found that there usually is just one bun that I fall in love with.

Just one bun LEL? Not me! The breeder that I met brought 3, Marlee, Moshi, and their sister who looked just like Marlee but acted just like Moshi. The other girl had a cut on her lip so the breeder said she wasn’t for sale. I couldn’t decide between Marlee and Moshi so got them both. If the breeder would have let me have the other girl, I probably would have taken her too, in fact it was originally between her and Moshi (before the breeder noticed the cut), because Marlee hid in the carrier thumping at first and wouldn’t come out. When she finally did come out, she hopped into an empty bowl — she was an orange ball of fur in a bowl.

Ha ha ha JR-me neither! How could you decide between them?
But of course, you can always have more bunnies. You ‘can’t’ have less bunnies.
