Hi, guys, it’s me and Chito again.

I guess I was too preoccupied with stuff that I didn’t notice our hay supply thinning, so when I eventually did (only a handful was left), I ran to the nearest pet shop to buy some Timothy. I was initially planning to get some online but the supplier said there’s not going to be any until November so I just- did what I could.

Anyway, so I started dishing this new hay. When I opened the package, my first impression was of how sweet it smells. I mean, it makes me want to take a bite and all. The stalks look fresher, too. So I was excited to give it to Chito but then she took a sniff and walked away. And I was like ((( The hay that she used to consume before this came from her farm and it’s so dry and dusty and all but she ate them. Do you think I should go back to the farm’s hay or is there a way for me to salvage this 500g of sweet-smelling hay?

        Thanks, guys.

PS: and oh, Chito hates the hay rack (or the hay). Do you guys cut the strands and place it in their food crock? Because that’s what I do, is it good for them?

I find that once bunnies eat farm fresh hay, that’s all they’ll eat. Pet-store hay has probably been sitting on a shelf for a long time, and it is probably stale and tastes bad for rabbits.

I would go with the farm fresh hay.

Rabbits should eat nice long strands of hay. I just put it in a corner of the litter-box. They bunnies like it because they could eat mouthfuls at a time.

It’s not actually fresh, the ‘farm hay’ :3 Because timothy doesnt grow here, all we can get is store-bought hay

The hay I brought with Chito the first time was….very dry, rather brown in colour, and very, very dusty

Keep trying with the hay – rabbits can be like children if they aren’t familiar with it, they get suspicious and won’t try it right away.

So I’ll just leave them laying there and keep supplying them? Okay. I hope she would eat them since her droppings had darker colour now, which an article said is signs of low fiber Thanks, guys!

If you have tips to make hay more…interesting, I’m happy to accept suggestions!

You could try putting something in there like a treat or some pellets to see if you can get her to forage through it which sometimes makes them eat it.

I can totally relate to this, Beebun. Timothy isnt grown at our side of the world. There is one thing you can try though. If there is any horse race centers around where you live, ask them from where they get hay. I come from India and timothy hay is imported here only for horse race clubs. Hopefully they will give you the details of the importer and it will work out. The importer might sell u only in bulk though. Good thing is that when you buy in bulk it will be cheaper (I spoke to an importer whose rates are under Rs.300 per kg while at the pet store its Rs.700 per kg). The difficult part would be to make a storage area for the big bale and protect it from moisture and sunlight.

Update! Chito is eating her hay now. I ended up giving a handful of them and putting it just there and soon enough she begins eating them. SO. HAPPY. Although it does make a huge mess. I need to invest on a hay rack, don’t I?

And oh, great advice on the horse club thing, Avantika, thank you very much! A friend of mine keeps a horse and I hope she’ll have a contact line to the importer! Cheers from fellow Timothy-less country sigh
