The vet prescribed Moshu some Ciprofloxacin for 3 days for treatment of UTI. Its a small tablet, the smallest you’ll find, and I have to give it to her half a tablet for 3 days and then call the vet back. I dont know the weight of the medicine since she gave me a few from a collection. But I asked my dad and he said the tablet might be 1 mg. That means I have to give her 500 mcg per day for 3 days.

She is 5 months old and her weight is 1 kg. Does this dosage sounds safe ?

Today, Moshu also got her first shot – Ivermectin. She took it like a boss

House Rabbit Society’s article (  http://www.rabbit.org/health/antibiotics.html ) says that Ciprofloxacin carries a low risk. Any of you had a difficult time with this medicine ?

What all side effects will accompany these two medicines ?

I’m curious about the Ivermectin shot, since Ivermectin is usually used to get rid of mites and other parasites? Anyways, I have not had experience with Ciprofloxacin and I am not a vet, but according to MediRabbit’s table here, up to 20 mgs up to twice daily is within the safe range of dosing this drug. Sounds like your vet knows what they’re doing!

Both of my bunnies were proscribed cipro for an upper respiratory infection they had early this summer. My girl got sick first, and the vet tried two other antibiotics before going to cipro. IIRC, the vet was reluctant to try cipro because it carries a greater risk of arthritis in older bunnies. That was the only danger/side effect that the vet mentioned, At that point, with two unresponsive drugs and a week of my baby being sick, the risk of her contracting pneumonia was pretty high so we went with the cipro and that cleared her right up. The boy got sick almost immediately after and so we just did cipro for him. Neither one exhibited any bad effects from the drug. I may have upped their chances of having joint problems when they are senior buns, but my understanding is that the upper respiratory infection can be a real killer of rabbits, and my babies were only 3 months old at the time, so the risk seemed worth taking to me.

I dont know the weight of the medicine since she gave me a few from a collection.

They are all the same size & colour then? Are there any symbols or numbers on the tablet?
Perhaps you are best to ring the clinic and just confirm what strength the tablets are, for your own peace of mind.

Ciprofloxacin is pretty similar to baytril (enrofloxacin). 500mcg seems too low a dose. Anywhere from 5 – 20mg / kg is often recommended for rabbits. Also 3 days on antibiotic course is very short, though I don’t know what the norm is for cipro.

I called up the vet today and she told me to continue with the medicine for a week. Also, the dose I am giving her is 25 mg per day, I confirmed from her. Moshu is about 1-1.2 kgs. I will go to a chemist today and get 20 mg tablets if I find any. I am even scared about the extra 5 mgs.

I’ve used cipro in the past with no problems. This is what they use for people exposed to anthrax.
