Doing a BIG assignment for school with my friend, and when we’ve finished, it’ll be showed in an Expo night at a local college. We, both being huge animal lovers, chose animal welfare. And we got into the topic of animal testing. We have found a website – http://www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au that has a list of cruelty free brands in all different areas, but I wondered if any of you guys used cruelty free, and if so, what do you use? It’s so sad…I’m pledging to go cruelty free where possible from now on!

Aww. Good for you!!! I went to apply for a job in a lab one time, walked in the place and asked if they do animal testing. They said yes. I walked back out. Didn’t want THAT job. Best of luck with your project!!

It’s horrifying to see the aftermath of animal testing. Especially having a bunny yourself!

I don’t buy anything that is tested on animals. I don’t use specific things most of the time, but whenever I am buying, I just check to make sure.

What a wonderful opportunity for you! Well, I’m a hairstylist and I can safely say that many professional product lines are cruelty free. My salon is a Paul Mitchell Focus salon, basically meaning we specialize in the Paul Mitchell brand. Paul Mitchell is cruelty free, and an amazing company all around, as well as MoroccanOil. Both of these product lines freely state they are cruelty free and it is clearly marked on each bottle of product. This is one of the many reasons I love these two brands, but it definitely ranks as the number one reason

There was a thread on this awhile back. I always just look for the leaping bunny logo. Kirks, Jason, Burt’s Bees, Desert Essence, etc. Not sure what you have in Australia.

                  Here’s the website: http://www.leapingbunny.org/indexcus.php

Keep in mind that (at least in the US), certain things are required to be tested on animals. So even cruelty-free companies may have to use some ingredients that are tested if they go into things like sunblock or toothpaste.

Choice has some really good info in this.

If you put PETA in the search box on there, you’ll find more. I wasn’t able to hyperlink the other articles here for some reason.

Good for you!!!! I switched to only Cruelty-Free a few years ago and it makes you feel wonderful. I don’t bring anything into the house that has been tested on animals, beauty, personal or cleaning products.

Some people are reluctant to switch because it does take a little more effort and can sometimes cost a bit more, but it’s totally worth it to know you are not contributing to suffering. And if you buy the products from the cruel companies, you are basically funding their cruel experiments.

One of my fave brands for things like soap and body lotion is KissMyFace. I’m lucky in that my grocery store has a great selection of cruelty free personal and cleaning products. I usually stock up on things like dish, laundry soap and toothpaste when it comes on sale.

We only use cruelty free products. Usually only the products with the “Leaping Bunny” logo (<- Link)

The logo used to be for BUAV, The British Union Against Vivisection, but recently, has become a world wide brand known as Cruelty Free International.
There are a number of cruelty free brands that aren’t yet endorsed by Cruelty Free International, so, any site like choosecrueltyfree is a big plus!

Also, regarding foodstuffs, we avoid anything with Palm Oil and similarly sourced products unless research shows that they’re using a responsibly sourced, renewable palm oil.

It’s almost impossible to live entirely cruelty free today, though.

As a small example, general inoculations, a lot of them are proteins that are grown on fertilised hens embryos, and if you think hens within the food industry are treated bad, that doesn’t compare to pharmacology…
I, personally, don’t consider eggs to even be vegetarian. Yes, I know they’re not fertilised, but the bi-product of egg production are thousands of “useless” male chicks… Can’t be used for laying and they don’t want their eggs fertilised, so, they’re disposed of…
So, possibly a worth while point to make for your assignment could be the way these chicks are treated…
I’m not going to go into too much detail, but they use a machine called a “Chick Macerator”… But, I warn you… It’s probably some of the most distressing maltreatment of animals I’ve witnessed…

We’re (me and my wife) are not quite vegan, but pretty close to it.

There are virtually no animal products, food or otherwise in our house accept those used to feed are carnivorous house guests, (Cats and Ferrets)

Gah, anyway… I’ve done the preachy animal rights things enough… Apologies for waffling…

In the EU, Cosmetics are no longer allowed to be tested on animals anywhere in the world and imported, its such a massive step forward. Cruelty Free International are now tring to push the same ban through in other countries. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21740745 .
We only buy cruelty free products in our house. Ecover are a great cleaning product brand who have recently certified, and its available in most supermarkets.
