I am looking at adopting a new bunny next year I am on uni holidays until march so thought end of Jan would be a good idea since i would be home a lot and I figure the number of buns needing a new home after christmas will be fairly high

I already have two buns Peach and Shamus. They are both a year old and both sterilised. Peach is a girl and Shamus Is my little man

Do you think adopting a male or female bun would be better? I’m not sure how either of my buns will react to another bun, but my intention is to bond the new bun with Peach and shamus.

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? Thanks

Probably a girl would be easier to bond, but you could do it either way. I would recommend taking your bunnies on a date at a rescue so they can pick out their own friend.

I think it really just matters on the personality, Easiest if you let them pick for sure.

Them being the rabbits, not necessarily the shelter staff lol

For me its easier to have one  I would love to have more but Mr. Jealous here.   I tried.

My places are too small anyways   Mom I am staying with for now its way too crowded would not work.

I think some of you are lucky  if you can handle more than one and it works for you.  2 and 3 times the fun.

Yep let them pick their new friend is usually easier I hear.  That I do not doubt either.

For me keeping them seperate is too much work which is what happens with Mr. Jealous

I’m hoping Roberta will give some advice here. She’s involved with a rescue in your State. She can probably give some insight into what their protocol is for adopters introducing their rabbits to the adoptable buns. Also suggest other organizations if you’re not local to her.

I agree it’s more about the nature of the rabbits then it is their gender.
Also, where they meet makes a difference most times. On neutral territory is best. Things can become different once the rabbits are in home territory so care should be taken to establish trust between them before they go into their long term habitat.

Hi Floppy Buns…. Just saw my name mentioned… You’re down South aren’t you….. I know several rescues and sanctuaries that way or if you don’t mind travelling we have some gorgeous buns on the North side……. Most will arrange a play date if the foster carers is agreeable and many will also allow a trial period just in case…. Let me know when you want to start looking…. I may know where there is just short of a dozen beautiful little REW’s

Thanks guys I am hoping my buns will be able to help pic out their new friend

Hey Roberta Yeah i am SOR. Awesome I will definitely contact you when i am ready to start the process I have been looking on some of the rescue websites at some of the buns available at the moment so many cute little faces! The one stipulation i have is not to get a bun thats too large because my little Peach is very small for a mini lop she is just all fur Shamus is good with her he never squishes her but i would worry if i adopted a larger bun it could be a problem. How big do Rew’s get?

I love the REW’s to LEL, they are my favourites……
REW’s can come in all sizes FP, minilop, dwarf right up to the giant breeds… Pandora is only tiny as is my Nermal, who whilst not a REW had REW siblings of the same size.. Petrescue.com.au has a lot of the groups listed with available bunnies but there are a couple that should be avoided as the do not desex or vaccinate (I will give you their details privately). A friend of mine also has a rbbit sanctuary in Collie…. They are outside of course but if I was a bunny that had to live outside it’s where I would want to be…..

Bunnies are very good at causing excitement aren’t they Floppybuns?

Good luck on your journey to adopt a new friend! I don’t know much about the rescues in Australia.
As the others said, letting your buns pick their new forever friend from the herd makes bonding easier (So I’ve heard)

                            Once again, good luck!
