So here’s the deal with copper, turns out that we took him to the vet because he was sneezing and had white gunk that he kept wiping away and was always present in his nose for the few days prior to going to the vet. We got him set up on an antibiotic and things had been improving but he never stopped sneezing until I took him Timothy hay away for a few days and just fed him pellets and spinach and different greens. Turns out I am allergic to the Timothy hay as well as any hay that’s really dusty. We live in an apartment and copper has full run of the place. This was ongoing for a few months so by this point we have narrowed it down completely to Timothy hay and any dusty hay for the both of us. What is a healthy alternative that I can give him so he gets the proper nutrition in his diet?

          Try Orchard grass hay.

What brand of timothy hay did you have? Nugget was also allergic to hay, but only to the Oxbow brand. It was very dusty and we also got him antibiotics thinking it was something else. We switched over to American Pet Diner Timothy Hay and he stopped sneezing. It’s good that you found out what was triggering his sneezing so you don’t have to worry about any other underlying issues with Copper. Try other types of hay, get the small bags so you don’t waste money if he’s allergic to other kinds. Good luck and keep us updated!

I’m allergic to most hays as well. Unfortunately my rabbits love the Timothy and I just got a great deal on a huge bag of it so my allergies are haywire right now. What I don’t do for my babies I’ve rotated between Orchard grass, Meadow Grass and Oat hay as well. I throw in Alfalfa for a treat hay once in awhile. Oxbow carries various types of grasses so I’d start with one type and see how it works for you and your bunny. Good luck!

                Hey copper,
My rabbit is sensitive to dust especially in his hay. I had gone to the vet because he was sneezing and it was clarified that he sneezes from dust in hay. We found out that my dad was allergic to timothy hay and my rabbit was sneezing a lot from it. I decided to change to orchard grass hay because it is much less allergenic and is one of the best hays to feed a rabbit. My dad was not allergic to it and my rabbit sneezes only every once and a while from it. I shake as much dust out of it before giving it to my rabbit. My rabbit does sometimes get clear discharge, but the orchard grass hay rarely makes him get it. He also seems to like the hay much more than Timothy. So anyway, I would recommend you try giving it to your rabbit. You can also try oat grass hay.

This! My husband is horribly allergic to Timothy Hay. Being around it and touching it causes sneezing fits, rashes, eyes to water, and congestion. We feed Orchard now and he doesn’t have the same reaction to it. If he’s around if for really extended periods of time (handling the bales) he might get the sniffles but it’s no where near as awful as being around Timothy for him.

I was using living world Timothy hay it’s the only thing available in my town without going online but I’ve been looking at different things on binky bunny store. I’m glad we figured it out too it was stressing for both of us and I was really scared for my little guy. I’ll look into buying American pet diner brand. As well as orchard grass hay. I would do anything for my rabbit too because he’s my world but my allergies are so bad it’s effecting my health and there is no way I’m going to give him up so I’m going to find alternatives. I’ve also read about this oxbow brand and heard great raves about it and I know copper would just loves all the different types so thank you the orchard grass sounds yummy. Timothy hay is terrible. When it starts messing with my health is one this but coppers health as well, I had to do something. I wanna keep his as healthy as I can so he has a long happy bunny life thank you everyone for the tips now I have something to go on.

My boyfriend is also EXTREMELY allergic to the Timothy as well. We use Orchard Grass and it’s definitely helped a TON with my boyfriends allergies. If you bring Timothy into the house though, he literally has quite the attack. Definitely third trying the Orchard Grass! The Oat Hay doesn’t bother him either.

could you try a different type of hay or less dusty kind? never had the problem so dont really know! and you could probably feed him fresh grass instead of hay as long as he eats enough!
also how do you start a topic?
