I thought that my hay allergies did not extend to timothy hay… Boy, was I wrong! Ever since I brought Mako home this morning I've had itchy eyes and nose and I've been coughing and sneezing too! Anyone have any suggestions to help? I took some allergy meds and I'm going to start taking my prescription allergy meds again as well. Obviously I don't want to give her up over something like this since it's not life threatening!

I'm finding orchard hay may not be as bad? Any other suggestions?

My husband can't be around Timothy Hay but Orchard and Oat don't effect him. There's really no substitute for hay so it's just about finding one that doesn't make your allergies go nuts.

Alright When I get paid I’ll order some other hay from the site here. Paycheck should be in in a couple hours! I want to finish up the Timothy first though but I might mix it so it’s not quite as much at least. My skin is itching now too… lol

timothy tends to be the worst offender with allergies. Oat is an excellent replacement, with orchard being quick behind as well I tend to use a mix of oat and orchard when I can, as it does give my fluffs a bit of variety too, so they keep their hay eating up

Thanks for the advice I'm so sneezy and sore throat-y and ugh.. I hope the new kind helps lol

EDIT: I couldn't find a place where the shipping was cheap enough to make it worth it except Amazon, with the free super saver shipping, so I bought a 10 lb bale of orchard grass and two little bags of oat grass. Mako better like this stuff (and I better not be allergic). Fortunately that should last a good while so it makes it worth it even though it was quite a bit out of my budget lol!

The few times we’ve had Timothy because they didn’t have Orchard and he had to handle it (I tried to do it most of the time) he put a sweater and gloves on to do it and then took them off right after. It still made him stuffy and everything but he didn’t get as itchy. Once he even used winter socks, lol. He put them on his arms like arm warmers without hand holes and tossed them in the laundry after.

Hopefully different varieties help you out a lot!

I'll try that til I run out of the timothy. It was free and I can't just waste free pet food… lol! For some reason the oat hay doesn't come until Halloween (????) so that will be a nice surprise later on!

i have very severe hay allergies as well so have only been giving my rabbit orchard grass.. so far so good, bunny likes it and i only have to supplement my daily medication with an extra dose (as approved by doctor) once or twice a week. I haven’t tried any other hay yet and have been worried about variety so i might take some of the advice here as well and grab some oat hay too

As an update on the hay situation, I found out that Rural King sells “mixed hay” so I decided to go and get two of those since my hay order hadn’t shipped yet and it was a lot cheaper. So I get home and lo and behold… The hay is already on its way. I went to return it, but they would have only given me $7 back and I decided it wasn’t worth it. I know it’s good quality hay at least so there’s that I suppose.
