So I planted some herbs about a week ago.  I planted, basil, oregano, mint, and rosemary.  Well I’ve been of course checking on my plants everyday and I noticed a couple days ago my basil had HOLES in it!  >=(  Well the holes are getting bigger.  I checked around the planter and stuff to see if I could catch the bug but there was nothing around!  I need to check under the leaves to see if it’s aphids but I have not seen aphids around here in soooo long.

Someone recommended using diatomaceous earth but I don’t know how to use it.  Keep in mind these herbs will eventually be eaten by rabbits.  I need something safe that won’t hurt my rabbits. I’ve been looking up the diatomaceous earth and it seems good but I don’t know how to use it?  It says it needs to be kept dry to be effective so that means I couldn’t sprinkle it in the planter….What other things can I use around and in the planter that won’t harm the rabbits or herbs?

The bugs is only after the basil…Not the mint, oregano, or rosemary.  My dad said it’s because they are too fragrant but I didn’t think that would bother a bug…

        I am a novice gardener….I just need some advice….

My basil is going to die if I don’t find a solution soon…

I’ve heard of D.E being used for flea treatment, but I’ve never thought of it for plants, if you get it, make sure it’s food grade, I do know that much. I did a quick google search and found a couple of links that may be helpful.

          http://homeguides.sfgate.com/apply-…45493.html

http://wellnessmama.com/2524/organi…d-control/ (go down a bit for that one, plus it has other organic was to prevent pests.)

          I hope those help some.

It will be caterpillers….. Sneaky little beggars and they are usually green so they blend in. There is a product called Dipel that is harmless to everything but caterpillers. Its an enzyme not a chemical. It disrupts their growth cycle somehow.

Thank you Bunny Daddy. Those links were VERY helpful! I am going to get some D.E.

I checked again this morning and it is not caterpillars, it is these tiny little bugs. Not sure what they are. They are not aphids. They hide in the soil. They are starting to eat my mint now too. =(

Hopefully I can get rid of them and protect my plants.

Are they light green/white? Those are probably mites, if so. I actually don’t have any advice or information as I have the problem myself – my violets got them a while ago and they stunted its growth. It hasn’t bloomed flowers in over a year now … it’s depressing. I don’t know how to get rid of them. Another ivy plant I had, we had to put outside because it was COVERED in them. All over.

I’m just lurking this thread to see if anyone has some miracle way to help. I did research and couldn’t find much, sadly.
