Today when I was watching my bonded pair relaxing, I noticed a flash of crimson on Dunkin’s back foot. Of course I instantly became considered so I went ahead and picked him up (he hates it and hyperventilates) to check for an injury. What I saw was a whole bunch of blood on his hock. There was also a big stain of blood on their mat.

For the past year Dunkin has had red irritated hocks. It started since he has gotten older; he is 4 years. I’ve been doing everything I can to make sure the irritation doesn’t progress into full blown sore hocks. Their NIC cage is on linoleum but most of it is covered with a soft mat. They also have a shelf which has thick fleece on it. I make sure to keep his nails trimmed up and he isn’t overweight.

Depsite my best efforts, this is what happened.

I put some Neosporin on it and will be buying bag balm to put on his hocks on a regular basis. Any other suggestions?

im not sure how your Dunkin plays or receives different objects. but my Yeti has a massive feather cushion he lounges on and bunches… perhaps a feather cushion (with a secure, thick pillowcase) on the floors instead of a fleece blanket/rugs?
          extra padding.. ? “/
sorry i cant be of more help.

I feel you! We have a rex with sore hocks. They were open wounds when we got her. Our vet wanted to see if it would improve without antibiotics. There wassn’t too much we could do, but for now, while it is an open wound, it is important that your bun stay on a clean floor (not saying yours is dirty of course), extra clean litter (Carefresh, preferable, we add 2 inches over our horse pellet litter) and cover the floor for now, with 3-4 soft layers. We confine Carmela when her hocks flare up. We’ve been painting her dry, non inflamed hocks with New Skin once a week for a few months now and she hasn’t has a flare up. She runs around on our wool rugs and hard wood floors all day. I highly recommend trying it once they heal.

It should clear up if you keep it clean and dry, but if you see any pus or it gets worse, please go see your vet, it can get really bad. Good luck!

Poor Dunkin. That looks very painful. I suggest a trip to the vet. Olivia had sore hocks, not to the point of bleeding but very raw looking, and my vet put her on oral antibiotics as a preventative. Open wounds can abscess and it is very difficult to treat once that happens. Your vet will probably give you something to clean his feet with as well. It’s urgent that you treat them asap before they get any worse. Don’t want to worry you but sore hocks can get serious.

Make sure to keep his area super clean, in the meantime.

Two of my buns had problems with sore hocks and I bought them these:

Snoozie mats. They are made for dog kennels and are very deep and soft. They come in different sizes. I havent’ had any hock troubles since buying these. I swear by these for sore hocks.

Just FYI, I’ve heard that rabbits cannot be treated with the Neosporin+Pain Relief (which is the most common kind nowadays). They say it can induce heart failure in rabbits. Google “rabbits neosporin” for the info.

Poor Dunkin, that looks really painful. I would have the vet look at it…she may give you more advice on what would help or what might be causing it…

                    Good luck and speedy recovery.

Equalsign- That is true. The regular stuff is safe for buns though.

Thank you everyone for the replies and help, I really appreciate it.

britt and yetti – I do think that extra padding is needed. I’m going to try to find the cushion LittlePuffyTail suggested at the local pet stores today. Thanks for the good vibes!

mocha200 – Thank you! He is doing great. The hock looks a lot better and he isn’t having any trouble jumping onto his shelf and binkying around.

Nicolene – Thank you for sharing your experiences and tips. I’m definitely keeping their cage super clean and comfy. Also switched to a soft bedding for their litter box.

LittlePuffyTail – I’m going to buy the mat you suggested to fit the entire floor of their enclosure, hopefully today. If I cannot find it in store I will buy one online. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain at all, but we all know how good rabbits are hiding what they are feeling. I believe what happened was the hard spot on the hock was somehow ripped off.

equalsign – Yikes, thank you for the warning! I remembered being told previously by my vet not to use the Neosporin+pain relief, so thankfully I’ve been using the original formula that is safe.

yes,, SNOOZZY mats rock,, they make them up to 49×30 inches (put several side by side in a long X-pen).the 43×28 fits perfectly inside a 2×3 NIC grid section

                        http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Pet-SnooZZy-Sleeper-Medium/dp/B00028J0C4
super-easy to clean up and vacuum. hay will not cling to a snoozzy like it will on fleece,
if you put a fleece blanket over that, it will be super cushy, or just straight mat for super-soft.
I have fallen asleep inside the buns’ x-pen like this.

you WANT the callous on the hock, it may not be pretty, but it is nature’s protection for the type of running your bun has been doing.
it looks like the callous on the bloody one may have been snagged on something.

Dunkin’s hocks are doing good so far. I was able to find a Snozzy pad at a local pet store that fits their cage perfectly!

Both Dunkin and Amber love their super comfy cage bottom.

Awww..they look so cute on their Snoozzy!!! When I first bought them for my buns, they would just lounge on them for hours. They are so plushy and soft. Wouldn’t mind one for my bed!

There is a human equivalent of the Snozzy, its the faux mink throw. I have two and if I am very nice and subservient the cats will allow me to share them.

I concur! Someone bought me a faux minx throw from Pottery Barn and it’s by far the most luxurious (only second to my Rex rabbit) I have ever felt. They have them every winter.
