I went out to check on my 8 rabbits today and I noticed that something was really wrong about Moonlight.

His eyes are reddish and half of his face looks swollen. His ears stick out at weird angles and have some sort of brown scabby thing growing in patches on it. Moonlight doesn’t seem to be hearing very well and a lot of fur on his neck has been pulled off.

Is there a specific name for what’s happening, and will it go away if I just leave it?

I live in Thailand, where the weather is damp most of the time and there aren’t many professional rabbit vets here.

(please excuse my messy links, I’m not very good at forums yet)

How long was it between checking on the buns… Has this developed overnight or over a few hours ?

and, No, I do not think what ever it is will go away if left, you need to get to a Vet ASAP. It could be mites or anything and if it was to end up fly struck it would be absolutely tragic. Even worse if it is something contagious it could spread to all your buns very quickly so getting to a vet quickly should hopefully get treatment for Moonlight and preventative treatment for the others before they become ill.

I agree. And if getting to a rabbit vet is impossible I think any vet would be better than no vet. He needs medical attention. Swelling, especially in the face area, is dangerous.

This looks like a serious infection. The ears could be infested with mites as well if you are seeing brown patches — the infection could be related to that.  Don’t know.  But if all of sudden it swelled up, then this is probably a fast growing abscess OR he got hurt somehow.  Either way, it’s best to talk to a vet.

This is the only rabbit-savvy one I could find in Thailand.  I have no idea how close or far, but if too far, call this vet and see if they can recommend another vet that might be near you

Is it possible that it is a bee/wasp sting? I saw one flying around that day.
I still haven’t taken him to a vet, although I really am trying.
Thank you for finding the vet above, but he is very far away (I’m in Bangkok).

I really wouldn’t wait these things can escalate and kill your rabbit quickly. I think it unlikely it is a wasp sting more likely and absecess resulting from infection caused by mites or something. This vet is in Bangkok and mentions exotics and has rabbits featured. http://www.vet4polyclinic.com/th/
