So Riley is shedding.Alot.  His fur is VERY short because he has rex fur. Everymoring when  i go to say hello there are piles of hair on the carpet. I clean them up but  the shedding is just not slowing down. Its been like this for almost 2 weeks. Where i live , its acting like spring already but he hasnt gone outside yet- too cold and windy- but i do open windows…is the warmer air confusing his insticts? The spring birds are already here. So i just wonder if spring is coming early this year and this is causing the shedding..? But last year when he was just a baby he didnt shed this bad at all. I try to brush him but nothing takes off the hair. Im also worried about him getting hair balls. Im constatly cleaning the rug so he isnt tempted to eat  the hair. I have tried about 5 diffrent short hair brushes and theyre just not picking up hair . But my main concern is to make sure Riley doesnt get a hair ball or something. Anyone else have or having this happen? If you have any advice please let me knw! Thanks

Rabbits don’t get hairballs – as long as he is eating lots of hay he should be fine.

I think shedding cycles are different for every rabbit. I think it has more to do with the amount of daylight more than anything and the daylight is getting longer.

For rex rabbits I recommend you go to Costco (or wherever really, just try to get them in bulk!), and buy lint rollers like you would use to get hair off of your clothes. Then you literally just brush your rabbit with the lint roller. Easy as pie. It makes rex rabbits the easiest, imo, to groom.

And I guess there is this new thing called a Schticky. I honestly have never tried one, but if it does what it claims, it would be a cheaper alternative to lint rollers. That still being said, it might not work on a rabbit as well as a regular one. So it is up to you. A lot of times places like Walmart or Bed, Bath, and Beyond have As Seen On TV stuff in stores.

It’s perfectly normal for a rabbit to shed for a couple weeks, multiple times a year. Many inside rabbits don’t quite shed with the seasons (mine often shed around Christmas, which is well into winter.

Like Sarita said, hair balls aren’t an issue. Wetting your hands and petting him, or using a sticky lint roller are both good options.

I found the hairbuster comb worked the best at taking off large quantities of rex fur during shedding. wet hands and lint rollers work too.

My rex Spockie used to shed for about a month, and do so 4x a year. Many bunnies have 2 smaller sheds and 2 large sheds, or some combination. So your bunny is perfectly normal. A hand vac might help pick up some of the flying fur, too.

Make sure he has enough hay. They don’t get furballs, but they can’t ever throw up so the hay keeps their guts moving. If you start to see poos that are stuck together with what looks like threads, we call those string-of-pearls. They are ingested fur being excreted. Just keep an eye on his poos to make sure he goes regularly.

I use wet hands on my rex, she’s shedding at the moment too and sheesh that is a lot of rex fur. Just take a little bowl of water in with you if it is a big shed so you can wipe off your hands and rewet them.

I use the “wet hands” method on my Mini-Rex along with a “Small Pet Furminator” for heavy sheds.
