I love you guys! Pardon me while I wax sappy! And perhaps rant a bit…. (What? Me? Complain?….) lolz

I have a very stressful day ahead of me tomorrow. My dog has had troublesome stomach distress and itching in the last two weeks that I haven’t been able to eliminate with bathing or diet and I am afraid she may instead have some kind of infestation. (Just what I’d need with my brood!) I have been searching the net all night and posting to my other (dog) forum to see if anyone knew more about a connection between antiparasitics and seizures/coma in my dog’s breed, (in fact, that site is where I first saw the warnings) so I could go to my appointment well armed with info, and most of the folks there either ignore you or some just become rude when you ask questions. It isn’t half the atmosphere of help and consideration that we have here at BB.com.

        Our forum is definitely unique.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a few nice people who post there or I wouldn’t give it a sniff, but seriously, I needed some help/references tonight and came up scratching my head (and shedding a few angry tears). Sure, you can’t get professional advice from other dog owners, anymore than we can tell someone exactly what to do in a particular situation…but you can glean experience. I basically got ridiculed instead.

Why is it that bunny people are so gregarious? You would think all animal lovers would feel a sense of camraderie, but most other places I visit seem to have some kind of pecking order or attitude problem. It’s rather disheartening.

But not here. If anyone doesn’t realize how wonderful this site is,and how fortunate we are to have it… then take a good look around. You will find no nicer folks online than this place. Not being dramatic or confrontational, just stating a fact. BB is AWESOME.

So I just wanted you all to know, I really appreciate how I can bring my worries in here and you are always available for answers or at least can  talk me off my ledge.

So, thanks. Really. ((((((((hugs)))))))) You folks rule. Give yourselves a round of applause. This is the best forum on the net (at least for bunnies and definitely for friends!)

        (steps off soapbox)

I know how you feel!! I always feel like there are eyes watching me when I am with my horse, like someone is going to come up to me and tell me I am doing something wrong instead of helping me out.

I am so glad I came upon this forum in my time of need. Especially this time… I have always wanted a rabbit but didnt know that the time was now, just so happened that a bunny that needed a home was in my classroom! And I couldnt say no! And boy did I need help, and this site and all its info and all its forum-ers were here to give me all the advice I could ask for, and more I am sure… so I say, thanks too!!!

          (Great shoutout MimzMum!)

Tipsy – I think there is something about a barn that makes people go crazy and judgmental. I was at one barn where people called you negligent if you didn’t basically strip your stall everyday. When my old boy pulled a tendon in the field and I had to walk him back to his stall. I got so many dirty looks and rude comments because he was limping. Was I supposed to air lift him? There are some nice supportive barns but they seem to be few and far between in my area.

I like this place a lot. When people I know tell me they’re thinking about getting a rabbit I give them three links: House Rabbit Society, the rescue I adopted from, and this website.

                Vibes to your dog!

Well said, Mimz. BB is a big part of my life and it’s because of the people here. It’s nice to have friends that REALLY understand.

Tipsy and Ripley: I’ve experienced the judgemental horse atmosphere as well, in real life and on forums. With horses, it seems like everyone has something to prove and has to be the best. I can’t stand “know-it-all” types. Luckily, I’m at a really great non-show barn where all the boarders are very friendly and helpful. Despite how much I’m inolved with horses, there are no horse forums that I frequent. Haven’t found one worth sticking with.

Well, luckily, for us (Ripley and LittlePuffTail) I believe if we have any horse problems we can get help here through the Lounge! Because we double as bunny and horse people haha! (Note the sarcasm in this next segment) I love how when horse people post a youtube video or a picture of their pony and people start criticizing their riding ability or their horse’s conformation etc. But here we share photos of our bunnies and just gush over them! Like LPT your bunnies in their blankies are way too freakin adorable! Mine wont stop moving I cant get a picture! When she does stop to do something cute and I get the camera ready she gets up like “wait no dont take it I am not ready!”

MimzMom: I feel exactly the same way! I’m just so happy there’s a place like BB and that all of you guys post here (: You said it well. I hope everything goes well for your dog!!!

Tipsy Bunny, Ripley, LittlePuffyTail: I once boarded my horse at a stable that was only for sport horses, the people there were very snooty. It seemed like everyone there was trying to prove how much more they knew about horses or how much better their horse or riding skills were. In my opinion a horse is a horse. People would loudly make comments/critiques to others, especially ones new to the horse world. Oh and some people were share boarding school horses and when other people would use them for lessons they would be so rude/mean to them and possessive, I would hear them say to people taking lessons “Did you ask to use my horse?” or “Don’t do this/or that” (in condescending tones).

Definitely agree. This was the first forum I joined. I had such a great experience with you guys that I joined other forums….. Urm….. not so great. This is definitely the best and I always look forward to logging on and hearing what you guys are up to. Needless to say, this is now the only forum I am a part of

…and good luck with the pup, Mimz.

Thanks for the vibes (and the props) everyone. I didn’t realize even horse folks had these problems as well.
Just a quick update on Jenna…and it pertains to the buns as well…doc says it’s a yeast dermatitis condition (and I suspect she’s had it much longer that I suspected) that is caused by ‘airborne allergens native to Alaskan winter homes’….DING! Sounds familiar as Mimzy has been suffering from skin/nasal problems for years now. We may have found the cause of all my pets’ problems!

Suffice it to say, one special shampoo (for Jenna) and the addition of a few more of these air purifiers that I ordered and hopefully everything will soon get back to normal!
I’m SO relieved it isn’t mites! (I should probably go over to my dog forum and swallow a little crow…lol.)

I think all pets suffer the same problem. Bird people are quick to jump on you too, there are so many different ways to care for them and passions run high on all sides of the opinion pool.

Glad it was something simple to treat.

MimzMum: That is good to hear! I wonder what those allergens are that are different from homes in other parts of the U.S.? Are you going to see if it’s the same thing for Mimzy?

I agree I love this place!!!!!

I feel your pain, my parents are having a time with Mandy (what else is new) she has these spots-they look like fungus. Have had C&S and biopsy done 9 times, nothing. Antibiotics, parasite meds, yada yada you name it. Special food…All going away-found huge spot under her arm yesterday. *sigh* I don’t know. She was at the vet today, had another C&S and biopsy, vet decided not to refer to allergist as dogs who go usually find 20 things they are allergic to and none you can control, thinking snow hits the allergies will stop and we’ll see it again in the spring. She also can’t go on an immune thing as she’s on antiinflammatories. *sigh* So yeah I know how you feel.

Bunnyfriend: I’m willing to bet my bottom dollar that this is something that is making not just Jenna and Mimzy ill, but all of us, including the humans. The more I read about the yeast that is causing Jenna’s problems, the more connections I find to other symptoms. This is going to be a rough winter because the other buns are also showing some new signs of irritation; Pip & Fiver have been more itchy than usual and drinking more water, I think in an attempt to flush their systems… The cats have always had their own troubles, lately they seem more poorly, but I chalked it up to old age. And the big thing is how much brighter any of them are when they’ve left the house for awhile….
This could be it at last!

Ideally, we should move house. I personally feel this one is too old to fix completely. We can’t afford that, (and Extreme Home Makeover hasn’t called), so getting the irritants down as best we can is paramount until we can make a bigger change.

                                    Hogeeze…WAY off topic here. >_<
K&K, sorry to hear about Mandy. She’s had a time of it. I guess where you are you don’t get so cold you can’t still open windows? This is our dilemma, the house would be more livable if we weren’t sealed in and so dark all of the time. My vet said that makes our homes breeding grounds for these allergens. Ew!

LOLZ, I have to laugh…’shows you the tolerance level of our forum…here I am talking about dust mites and other vile microscopic things…and it made me think of how even the mundane is discussed here. And I suddenly flashed on to RabbitPam’s ‘YAY, POOP!’ avatar…
Nowhere else can one discuss even the glory of POO like we can here! xD

Maybe you should e-mail Extreme Home Makeover a story about how all your animals are sick and include pics of how super adorable your babies are (especially Mimz). People love cute animals.

Maybe it’s because we’re all used to being looked at funny just because we have house bunnies! and all the bad jibs, jabs and bad rabbit-stew jokes that come with the territory 😉

I know this has gone on a tangent but I just wanted to say I agree More than anything I love that everyone here regards their bunnies as members of the family and not as another rodent in a cage. Other sites drive me nuts because new bunny owners will ask (for example)” is this hutch big enough? And I’ll be like, well, its ok with an additional pen, either and xpen or nic panels, because rabbits need at least 8sq ft of space for their home and then extra run time. Perfectly reasonable answer right? Then someone else will come along and be like, no thats plenty of space, my bun is in half that and heess fine. What a lucky bunny!
                                            Ugh. Anyway. <3 you all

Agreed! I used to visit another forum pretty often, it was on yahoo. It was pretty irritating. There seemed to be a lot of aggression there and very little support or knowledge. I like how you feel like you get to know some friends here.

Mimz: This is probably a shot in the dark (no pun intended) have you considered maybe using light bulbs that mimic sunlight? Like the kind people put over plants. You say that the reason so much is able to grow in the house is because it is dark…. who knows…. It would probably take new fixtures but you could just buy some and use screws to mount them on the walls or something, they wouldn’t need to be installed or anything.
Also, we used to have a rough time with dust mites. We were told to use something with pyrethrins in it (we used Adam’s flea mist or lice bedding spray) and to cover mattresses and pillows with microfiber or plastic covers. I think it helped. Our allergy problems did improve.
Good luck and (((( vibes ))) to your dog and all of you!
