Hi. My rabbit Lenny is 4 months old and he eats pellets and hay, but will not eat vegetables. I’ve read that you should slowly introduce them, but I have tried that and he just leaves the veggies in the dish. He does eat apples, but won’t seem to try anything else. I’ve tried different kinds of lettuce, green beans, and carrots. Are there any tricks for getting him to try new foods? Should I just use “tough love” and withhold the pellets to force him to eat veggies? I worry because he is a growing rabbit and needs to eat.

I would stick with romaine. One type for a while I would keep offering it. My bunny dislikes carrots so I don’t push the issue anymore. She snubbed all veggies at first also. I kept throwing out bits and pieces of romaine and she FINALLY took a bite out of it.. AND LOVED IT XD

Keep trying! I’ve noticed when I started limiting pellets, that is when Chacha began eating more veggies!

With Monkey, I had to continually shove stuff at her face to get her to try stuff. Eventually she would get annoyed and grab it to throw it away from her…. and finally taste it.

At 4 months, you don’t want to limit his pellets, especially if he isn’t a veggie eater. Limit the apples, as too much fruit can be bad for them.

My buns were cautious about new foods to start, now when I offer them something they are like “oooh, what is this new treat?” … just be persistent and do it one at a time and your bun should nibble something. Might be more successful when your baby is older and on measured pellets.

I had HUGE problems trying to get Tait to eat veggies. I grated carrots and ripped up lettuce leaves into really small pieces, almost like pellets, and put them in his pellet dish and he started eating them. I slowly made them into bigger pieces until he didn’t care anymore.

I’ve seen beans on the list of foods to avoid, so unless thinking has changed on that, it would be best not to offer those to your rabbit.

Here is a list of veggies by the vet who takes care of the rabbits at the sanctuary where I volunteer. Hopefully some of these would interest your rabbit.

                  Carrot tops
                  Cilantro
                  Beet tops
                  Swiss chard
Dandelion greens and flowers (no chemicals or pesticides)
                  Parsley
                  Clover
                  Kale
                  Cabbage
                  Collards
                  Broccoli – including leaves
                  Escarole
                  Carrot

I would just leave the veggies there for a couple of hours if she does not eat it then I’ll throw it away,my rabbit loves almost anything except
                    for some different veggies.

My bunny is a year old and recently he has drastically limited his intake of veggies. He eats a little then leaves it. He loves his pellets though. He is peeing and pooping alright. He’s a bright and playful little fella. But I just can’t understand why he isn’t eating his veggies.

For a 4 monthy old bunny, I wouldn’t give ANY fruit untill he is eating veggies. And quite honestly, if he never eats veggies, but eats pellets and LOTS of hay, I wouldn’t sweat the pellets. The hay is the most critical. I have a pair that only eat veggies if they are hungry. Otherwise, they perfer hay and pellets. And they only get 1/4 cup pellets a day each, so they eat a lot of hay. Keep feegin unlimited pellets to your baby bunny, and only start limiting the pellets once he is older. (9-12 months). I’d focus on hay first, then veggies second. No fruit untill then, or you will create a sugar-fiend!
