Hi I have a question I was hoping someone can help me with, I had a Dutch rabbit for 7 years and the other day he passed away,  He lived in a 4ft wide by 4ft long by 3ft high cage in which shades come down when there is heavey rains. He also came in the house from Nov to March or if there was a thunderstorm which could scare him.

My question is I had noticed a couple of weeks ago his testicles seemed very large, and in 7 years I never looked at them so I was not sure if that was normal or not….on Monday I found him laying in the cage dead, I turned him over and saw that his testicle had ruptured and the fluid was all over his lower body. As you could Imagine I was horrified since I saw him active earlier in the day to make matters worse by then he had a case of fly strike where the testicle was.

My question is, is it the ruptured testicles that caused his death? I feel terrible that I did not act on it when it seemed odd a couple of weeks ago

I have been very upset about this, any info you can offer

I’m so sorry about your bunny. Unfortunately it’s just impossible to know what was going on – the best thing would have to had your vet do a necropsy to determine what he could have possibly died from.

He could have had cancer, but a vet would be able to determine that better than we can.

So sorry to hear about your bun

On this forum, we usually advocate indoor bunnies, as its safer for them. You can usually see if theres an issue well in advance, and get it taken care of sooner, if you have more socialization time your buns. That,a nd fly strike is rarer in indoor bunnies.

His name is Jinx, just hope he didnt suffer amd it was quick, he stays outside but comes in in Nov, I had built him an  outdoor cage that is 4 feet wide by 4 feet long, also was 3 feet high he also has the same dimensions for his indoor cage as well. Used to take him in when thunderstorms. He weighed about 5lbs and loved to snuggle up I had him since he was 7 weeks old.

I just hope he didnt suffer

I’m sorry about Jinx’s passing. If you had him 7 years, you certainly were good to him and he had a long happy life. Consider bringing the net one indoors year round. It’s so much more enriching to have them inside all the time.

Johnny, I’m so sorry to hear about Jynx.
My sincerest condolences. Bunnies are so much more delicate than we realize sometimes.

If you don’t mind, I am going to move your post to the Rainbow Bridge section of the Forum. It’s where people go to offer their condolences to you and answer your questions regarding your loss.

That is really terrible. I had a bunny die for reasons unknown when I was younger. The worst part is you drive yourself crazy wondering if you could have done something. It sounds like it was some sort of cancer, I’m guessing he wasn’t neutered? Rabbits are prone to cancer in the sex organs. Often, once the swelling starts its already too late. There’s no way you could have known.

I think he went quickly and therefore didn’t suffer much. Try not to blame yourself, it’s good you had 7 years with him.
