I live in the Holland, MI area which is HUGE for their Annual Tulip Time Festival- hunderds of thousands of people come to Holland during this week for parades, concerts, events, etc.

A neighboring small town created a spoof on the start of Tulip Time- they decided to hold an Annual Dandelion Parade on the first day of Tulip Time which lasts for a week.  Ironically enough the Dandelion Parade is popular with locals- but anything to do with Tulip Time- the locals know to avoid.  Traffic is terrible, there is no where to park, etc.  And once you have seen Dutch dancing, street sweepers, etc- unless your kid is in a parade most locals just don’t go.

So here is Bailey’s second parade that I have done with her (did July 4th last year)- I just decorated her in spring type colors since you can’t buy fake dandelions as they are a weed and not  true desirable flower.  And there is even a pic of her with her Western saddle on.  It is a Tucker saddle- very comfortable with a gel seat, but most importantly- the stirrups adjusted short enough for me without having to have a professional leatherworker shorten them.  I considered a Circle Y saddle- but it was not as good a fit for my stocky girl (and she is young yet- and not going to get any narrower) and the stirrups even as short as they could go-were still too long.

And a GREAT tip for anyone that has horses and decorates them for parades or anything else- I made my own hoof and coat glitter gel.  I mixed Aloe with glitter and applied it with a sponge paint brush-  It only cost me $2 to glitter her up!  Last year I bought glitter hoof polish and the top got sealed shut with the polish (my fault) so I only ever used it once and it cost $14- and I bought blue and clear sparkle coat glitter gel for $10 a tube- I still have those- but I obviously overpaid for what I needed.  Oh- and those are stickers on her rump- I bought regular stickers from the craft store, made the backs a little tackier with stick glue and pressed them on her coat.  The stickers pulled right off afterwards and the glitter and dried aloe combed right out- and I left her hooves to wear off the glitter which should be gone in a day or 2.  And the stickers on her butt remind me of Appy markings- which she is an Appaloosa without spots.

        Introducing BAILEY…..

“Nice mom, take a picture of my butt!” LOL

Very cute! I know nothing about horses. So I didn’t even know you could glitter them up! haha But that is a cool tip on the aloe and glitter. Always nice to learn about cheaper alternatives to expensive products. Wonder if that would work on humans. lol

Does she like doing the parades?

How neat, I actually used to live not that far from Holland (just outside Flint) and my family went to the Tulip Festival a couple of times, it is very lovely, although having lived in several places that tend to draw a lot of out of towners for various events (the Ann Arbor art fair, ski season out in Colorado, and worst of all, the seven years I lived in Grand Blanc and had to deal with people coming to the Buick Open every year, especially when Tiger Woods would show, ugh) I can see that it might be annoying for locals. The idea of a Dandelion Parade is awesome! And your horse is adorable in her glitter ‘makeup’!

Bailey did well in the parade- there were firetrucks, school band and other scary things.  The parade route was easier than the way back- as the horses had the whole width of the road on the way there.  On the way back to the trailers- I rode her and kept her off to the side but there was oncoming traffic and pedestrians.  She had 2 little spooks where she jumped in place and settled and once when I was not right behind another of the horses- she felt she had to swerve way around (into the slow traffic) a storm drain.  But none of it was a close call- so it was a good experience for both of us.

Here is another pic of her after the parade that my friend took and just posted on FaceBook.  She is actually alert in this photo and with her headstall on too.

Shes beautiful, I love the glitter spots. She’s really got some muscles in that apple-butt, do you rope off of her?

Bailey is just a big, stocky girl. Since I own her- I have access to her 100% of the time as opposed to the half-leasing which I did on another horse before I purchased Bailey. Even though Bailey is lazy, but responsive- I can’t even put a dent in what she can do, so I am letting a 15 year old girl use her for 4H- so she rides her when she is able to make it out to the barn. It is against the rules for a boarder to lease out their horse (newer rule)- so I am letting her ride Bailey for free. And this girl has had a 4H horse thru the barn for the past 3 years- so she is kinda “grandfather claused” in. But I am techinically not leasing her as I am not getting any money (which could be the only thing other boarders could resent about the situation).
Bailey is actually more of a lazy horse than a speed horse- that is why I was able to get away with purchasing such a young horse for such a new rider as myself (she just turned 6- so she was 5 when I bought her). So no roping, just trail riding and 4H showing. She was bred by her breeder to be a hunt seat horse and was shown a lot on the Appy circuit- the breeder said she was for sale since she was not tall enough (she is 15.3)- I have a feeling that she did not have a strong will to compete. Worked out great for me!

Sounds like the breeder’s loss was your gain! She is a beautiful horse!

My big old paint mare, Jessie was a lazy girl, steady as they come unless someone was on her trying to show off. Then she’d ditch them quick, but little kids, she walked like she was on egg shells. She loved to jump though, you had to be aware when you were out riding, if she saw something ‘worthy’ of her effort she’d do her best to get you to let her take a run at it and you had to hang on because she jumped like a dadgum goat!

This is a pic of her at the ripe old age of 49 (Sarita can laugh at this photo because I’ve gained 50 lbs since then…lol)

She is so pretty- I hope Bailey lives a really long and happy life like your Jesse did. Bailey with her inexperience and enthusiasm jumps obstacles with total overkill. Something that another horse knows to hop over- she gets a bit of a start and bounds over it. Great fun in a western saddle. : ) I am hoping that we will learn and grow together as a team for the rest of her life.

A good friend of mine lives in Holland. Maybe I should make my way over there some time and visit her and see this festival. I have heard so much about it, just never been. I live in the Detroit area BTW.

Awww, good girl, Bailey! Parades can be pretty stressful.

Why can’t boarders lease out their horses?? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that rule before.

Boarders can’t lease out their horses due to liability issues. There are 30 stalls in the barn and they want to keep control over who is riding on their property. I can have someone come ride my horse if I am there- they just need to sign a waiver. Basically I am the barns client- and there are to be no 3rd parties involved.

There used to be little to no rules- and then two 11 year old girls took some stupid chances- the girl that the family owned the horses is a great rider- the other girl had never ridden before. They decided to ride outside wihtout helmets. The inexperienced girl fell off and hit her head. They told the parents when the parents finally came back to the barn. The girls parents did not take her to the ER until later that night when she started vomiting- they did a scan and she had a brain bleed and needed surgery! She recovered- but she could have died if she had just fallen asleep and her brain continued to bleed.

Now instead of practically no rules- we have many rules. They couldn’t rely on everyone else’s common sense any longer. None of the rules affect me very much anyway- I am over 18 and wear a helmet anyway and I am not interested in leasing out my horse. I just believe in karma- and if you do good things- in return good things will happen to you (letting Bailey be ridden for 4H).

Bailey looks very pretty! I always wanted to try out that hoof glitter but never brought Winnie anywhere where she needed to be “glammed” up. I think parades would be lots of fun but Win HATES to trailer. She totally stresses out and unfortunately I don’t have one to practice with her.

I really like your saddle. Is it leather or synthetic? I can’t really tell from the pics.

I always wear a helmet too…no exceptions. I like my mind too much to take a stupid risk like that! My mare is usually very quiet but I always keep in mind that she’s a prey animal and has instincts.

                                      Weird . . . I posted here earlier today but it’s not here now . . . well, I think I said something like . . .

Interesting re: leasing at your barn. I haven’t leased in a while, but I used to all the time. I’m sure the contract has all kinds of liability language in it. Of course, if I were a barn owner, I’d be all kinds of liability crazy! Your 4H situation sounds win-win all around.

And I always wear a helmet. I got a concussion when I was wearing one, so no way I’m not going to wear one!

My saddle is leather. I love my saddle but it is heavy-about 30-35 lbs. You can see in the pics that I have the stirups adjusted as short as they will go. The trail ride stirrups came with the saddle- and those are a nice feature.

I love the “roaning” on your mare.  I am not sure if that is the correct term for the white or not.  I posted some pics in the Lounge maybe a week or 2 ago that shows Bailey’s scattered white hairs thru her chestnut coat- and her 2 white spots high on her right hip.   I have owned Bailey for 11 months now- and it seems to me that she has more scattered white than she did last year.  She just turned 6 in Feb.  How old is your Appy?  How long have you had her?  And did her white pattern stay the same or increase?

I can’t take any credit at all for having Bailey parade ready.  She was bred and trained to be a show horse- and was trained by an Appy trainer out of Ohio that was named 2009 ApHC trainer of the year- and Bailey even went back to him for a refresher right before I purchased her.  So she has had a lot of training and showing- and that is the only reason I was able to purchase such a young horse (I have only been riding for not quite 2 years).  http://www.rustymillerhorses.com/    This is the trainer’s website- one of the horses shown on the site is owned by Bailey’s breeder- Honkin Hunter.  Honkin Hunter is obviously a very talented show horse.  As much as I love Bailey- I have to admit Bailey is on the lazy side and likely had no drive to compete- though the owner mentioned she was selling her because she was too short.   Either way I lucked out by being able to buy my lazy forever horse.

Miles and me, what a beautiful pair you make. I live in Texas and had a western saddle, but I just rode “survival – don’t fall off” style. Mostly we just went bareback (the horse not me 😉 with a hackamore or just a halter.

I got Jessie for $100 back in 1969. I had gone with a friend to a barn to look at horses she might buy, and this big old paint was being used as the ‘babysitter’ to keep the people not buying busy and out of the way. Late that night, the barn owner went storming by with a shotgun yelling he was going to shot that horse because he’d left the windows in his brand new pickup truck down and she’d eaten the leather seats! People were holding him back and he said the first sob with a $100 could have her and they better get her out of his sight so I wrote a check, borrowed a rope and we were walking down the road about midnight to a pasture someone offered me for the night. The next day I came back with a rented trailer and got her away before the guy sobered up…lol

It was a bit hard explaining to my parents the next day that at the age of 16 I had gone riding with a friend and came back with a 16 hand horse…I slept in the barn the next night until my dad calmed down. We were Air Force and up to that time had never had a pet.

But it worked out and over the years that horse dealer tried his best to buy her back, the price got up to $2,000 but NO money was going to buy that mare from me. She was the onriest, streetwalking, lock-picking, gate-opening, fence jumping, cigarette-butt chewing, beer snitching, never catch her out in the open pasture horse you ever met, but she was MINE for 32 years.

Thanks! I don’t have him anymore, sadly, but his name is Mac. He’s a 17.2 Holsteiner gelding. Such a doll.

I ride English too! Sometimes I feel like a total outsider because I board at a western stable. Me and my little English mare are in a barn with reining QH’s and appys.
