Eleanore’s Vet Visit

I just wanted to thank everyone again for all their advice and comments. I took Eleanore to the vet today. And the vet said that she feels her health problems do stem from the death of her companion Lily and is showing signs of depression. She is going to be okay but she is down to 5 pounds, she has conjunctiva, a UTI and the sore hocks. The vet put her on oral antibiotics twice a day and eye ointment twice a day and ointment on her sore hocks and she said just to keep feeding her fresh veggies (since that is all she will eat) until she feels better and then go back to her regular pellets. Until her eyes are healed up, she does not want me to put her back in the cage with the other rabbit and to separate their cages until she is better but then to put them together. She feels that will benefit both of them. But her heart and lungs and everything else are good and she feels she will make a full recovery.  So thanks again for everyone’s help, I was so worried all week and it helped talking to someone about it.

It sounds like you have a good vet who is on top of it! That is good news. I will be sending healing happy vibes your bunny’s way. I sure hope she can get through this depression. I am sure it has taken a toll on her immune system, but I am glad to hear she is on treatment that will help her fight her health issues.

I’m so glad you have a great vet, and I hope Elenanor comes through ok. I find it so touching the buns miss their mates so much and have full empathy with them, having lost my own ‘bonded’ mate 3 years ago. I love the fact that your vet recognizes that the depression can cause such problems and is considerate of your bun’s emotions, wish he were here in Texas!

I’m so glad to hear that you’ve got a great vet and one who is so compassionate too. I’m glad you were able to come here and express and get out the anxiety you were feeling with your fellow bunny-lovers. I know it helps so much to be able to talk to people who understand what it is you are going through, and who, if we can’t solve the problem, we can at least be here to support you through it. Spoil her with whatever she will do and use it for growth out of her depression, just like you vet said, keep feeding her veggies if that’s all she will eat, maybe try a little pumpkin or applesauce too. Please keep us updated with her condition.

I’m so glad you took Eleanore to the vet, and that she was given good care. it sounds like your vet has heart and knows a lot about rabbits, which is excellent. sending healing wishes Eleanore’s way….

Eleanore has only been on meds 2 1/2 days now but her eyes are already looking better, the redness in them is going away. Her feet are not as raw and also seem to slowly be getting better (I took the advice and put rags down on her cage floor). She ate lettuce yesterday and picked at some carrots today.  She still will not drink water so today I got an eye dropper and gave her water that way. She took it very well, hopefully she will start drinking from her bottle again, I don’t know why she won’t.  Bu thanks again everyone for everything. I will keep you updated on Eleanore’s health.

It sounds like everything is coming along slowly and you’ve got her on the right track off of her depression, yay bunnyfan! Maybe she will not drink out of the bottle because it has the scent of the passed away rabbit on it? You might want to try a bowl of water in the interim just to see if she will drink from it. As long as she is eating veggies, she will get some water from them and should be OK.

A little update on Eleanore. She has been on antibiotics and her eye ointment for almost a week now.  Her eyes seem so much better, the redness is gone and it seems like the drainage has stopped.  Her sore hocks are looking better.  The one foot is healing really well and the other one is getting there. I just feel so bad for her, she has all the fur off of her back feet, her feet look so small and skinny!!!  She is still having accidents outside of her litter tray but not as much.  She still will not eat her rabbit pellets but she continues to eat lettuce and carrots. And the biggie, she started drinking from her water bottle again!!!! She is not drinking a lot of water but at least she is starting to drink some on her own. She is a very good rabbit.  She turns her head on her own to the side, allowing me to put the ointment in and takes the oral antibiotic with no problems. I think that she knows I am trying to help her.  So that is where we are with Eleanore’s progress.

Baby steps are better than no steps at all. It sounds like a lot of progress has been made and she is coming around. I am so glad to hear that she is taking fluids on her own now and the pellets, well the “ideal” bunny diet (depending on who you talk to) does not include pellets. Granted bunnies do get some extra something they may be missing, but given a balanced diet of water, hay and veggies (be sure to include ones that contain vitamin A) they do great so really I would not worry too much about the pellet aspect. Thank you so much for the update, I have been wondering how she is doing. As for the feet, they can take longer to heal because it is something they use every day and is constantly under pressure and can re-open sores and be slower progess. Did you vet mention anything about wapping the one that is slower to heal with gauze?

It’s so good to hear that things are going in a positive direction. Be careful not to feed her toooo many carrots as they are high in sugar. Were you able to get hold of the previous owner regarding the pellets?
