Hi everyone!  I have two brand new bunnies (well, actually one ’cause my daughter is taking one of them) and have built a cube/wire cage.  Right now, I have some realty signs duct taped underneath, but I am going to order an actual coroplast floor to fit the cage.

My question is:  Does anyone have an opinion as to whether the cage should sit inside the outer lip of the coroplast, or should I have the cage completely surrounding the coroplast (in other words, the coroplast floor would be completely inside)?

I’m just wondering ’cause seems like the bunny might try to chew on the coroplast…but I guess he’d be able to even if it were outside the wires…I just don’t know which way is best.  I know the guinea pig people all have theirs on the inside to contain the bedding, but I’ve seen rabbit cages both ways.

        Any opinions are greatly appreciated!!!

        Thanks,

        Terry

For the bottom of the cage, definately place it on top of the wires. The bunny can catch nails on it otherwise and it can also pose other hazards or problems.
You may want to think about also placing some on the the walls, I place the plexi-glass on the outside so it protects the paint and the walls from damage, plus it kepps the hay and litterbox contents contained. On the outside it’s also easier for me to lift it up on the outside to clean, rather than reaching into the cage. I have some on the inside around the hay because it sticks on the wires of the cage and so it just slides down and means a quick sweep with the hand broom.

Thanks for your reply.  Actually, I don’t have any wires on the bottom of the cage, so bunny is fine in that respect.

I’m thinking I’ll go with having it all inside the wire, as the guinea pig people do…I don’t guess it really matters.

Hi! I agree – inside the cage is best. Also, for flooring and potty training I like buying those small square rugs at Big Lots or other discount stores for some areas of the cage, then when the bunnies poop on them I can just pull them out and throw the poops away, OR if they pee – use a spray bottle with vinegar and blot with a paper towel and it comes out right away.

GREAT! Then I’m going to go for it. There’s a couple of people on EBay that sell the coroplast floors. I can get one for under $30 including shipping. So, sounds like a deal. Also, Big Lots is a great idea! I had wondered about using inexpensive throw rugs…I’ll go get some tomorrow.

                Thanks,
                Terry

I love Big Lots. Doesn’t matter how much money I will ever make. Even if I won a million dollars –  I would  still go there.  It’s such a great place to find deals on the basics.  I find all kinds of stuff there too for bunnies – like the rugs, and plastic slippery placemat to cover a particular area that I don’t want them going into – like a closet . I always forget to close it, so the placemats became my solution.

Ah yes – I feel the same about Big Lots – last time Brian and I went to this new SUPER Big Lots we found up the street from our new place here in Texas…we were like “lets just get a basket” because we had so many boxes we had nooo room for anything at the moment so, we walked around for a bit and ended up buying a COUCH…good thing it didn’t have to go in the basket…anyways, they delivered in 2 hours! fantastic! so not only are my bunnies houses outfitted with Big Lots items, my house is too

Oh my…I feel a shopping trip coming on. I have only been to one once and you’ve all got me thinking as I am re-designing my bunny condo. Bonsai was just terrorizing Daffodil out of the litterbox so I put two in and he was preventing her from using the bunny ramp to get to other floors. MEN! So I’ve got steps I made out of wood and cover them with carpeting, but those rugs sound great too! I’m gonna have to check all that out!
luvmycritters, I hope everything comes out great! Maybe you’ll share some pictures with us when it’s all done?

I use coroplast as the flooring my buns house and love it. it’s so easy to sweep with a lil handbroom and use vinegar / water spray as Moobunnay recommended. I also put a plastic chairmat entirely under their house to protect the carpet.

Okay. I made my FINAL decision and placed my order. We’re going with a red (to match my daughter’s room) floor that will be on the OUTSIDE to prevent temptations of chewing! The sides are 6 inches high on the 2 sides and 11 inches high in the back (to protect the wall!). She told me it would be shipped on Tuesday, so we’re excited.

My little Pongo has taken (of course) to doing his pee-pees in now three corners of the box, so we have multiple boxes set up. I’m hoping after he gets neutered (his 9 weeks old now) that he will settle down and decide on ONE corner (PLEASE!). I plan to get several cheap throw rugs that I can swap out and wash. Also, we’ve been using a small pet bowl for his pellets, but he’s making quite a mess with digging in them. Guess we need to get a self-feeder thank hangs by his hay rack…

My daughter has taken some AWESOME pics. I just need her to email them to me so I can share!!!

Ooo pictures would be great and I can’t wait to hear how the installation of the coroplast goes!

I love that we’re all cheap. And I totally agree with Jen’s comment— if I were rich, I’d still be a bargain shopper!
