Franz really likes toys that dispense treats (in his case just pellets). I took an egg carton and put some pellets in each depression, then I closed it and gave it to him. I have a video it’s so cute! His ears are perky and he picks it up an shakes it, and tosses it over his back! He was doing binkies later and was really happy. I totally found something tht makes him feel silly!
I’ll have to try that! Thanks for shraing. Do the pellets fly out when Franz whirls the carton around? Or do they stay inside? I guess if you clamp the egg carton shut, they stay inside. Do you poke holes in the carton so he can smell them through the paper?
There’s already a hole above each depression and he smells them right away. He shakes them out and sometimes they fall out and he eats them, and he just works till he gets them all out either by shaking or opening it
O, thank you! I just bought a carton of eggs – a half dozen, I can’t wait til they’re eaten so I can make Franz’s pellet toy!
Great idea. I will have to try that. Minnie and Maddie go crazy for pellets.
can you post a pic I am challenged…lol!
Ahem. I’ll second that.
I went a bought a carton of eggs made of cardboard so when I use them up I can have a new toy thing.
I need illustrations, photos, home movies, diagrams, 3 page instructions written in English/Chinese/German/Spanish/French with little stickers corresponding to the tools and parts list on the carton and toy pieces themselves and a folding out rug sized manual to follow….
you get the picture. Thanks.
Here’s that silly video I’ve been meaning to post! at 1:20 it gets really funny.
Thanks! One picture is worth a thousand words and a motion picture worth a zillion!! Cute how Franz flips it backward over his head! I’m going to have to get a full dozen eggs tomorrow!
I love it!!! So cute!
BWAHAHAH! Cactus! “IN MY FACE!!”
This is the conversation I had with my dad when I asked if he had an egg carton:
Me: Dad, do you have any empty egg cartons?
Dad: Do you need one for Koucha’s toy?
Me: O___O………….. (How did he know??)
lol that’s really funny! Well I guess there aren’t TOO many reasons one would want an empty egg carton
That is a great idea! I know my bunnies like to chew on the cardboard egg cartons but I never thought of putting treats in there and doing what you did. What a simple, yet brilliant idea! I’d love to put that in our “Toy Test” Section. Do you mind?
I don’t mind at all! I’ve actually been Finding other things to hide treats in as well; some things didn’t work out so well like my 2 liter pepsi bottle lol.
Okay, it’s now officially the current toy test! http://bit.ly/bbToyTest I just announced it to on twitter and facebook, so hopefully there will be many happy bunnies tossing around egg cartons. LOL! It was funny to watch Franz flip that carton so high he almost flipped himself. Rucy used to do that — brought back fun memories.
My boyfriend actually slow motioned it and it’s pretty amazing; he stretches out almost 2 1/2 feet off balance. I’ll try get him to jazz it up and I’ll post an edited version. I laughed so hard at the slow mo it’s adorable! Thanks for making my toy popular lol <3
I love it! that is a great idea. All my egg cartons have been styrofoam but I am going to the store today to go get some in the cardboard! Thanks for sharing that!
I have pasted your description to a doc so I can make it. I only have 2 eggs left, and then the carton is Hers!
*leaves to go boil 2 eggs*
I love that! If Pacey ever starts eating on his own again I am going to do that for him! Always trying to find new things to keep him interested.
Excellent, I will have to try this next time I get eggs! The egg industry should thank you…so many BBers running out to buy eggs now!
Thanks for this great idea! I gave it to my two buns to try yesterday and they loved it! It look a few minutes for them to get it, but they did in the end! I posted a video for everyone to see. Note their great teamwork on rolling the carton. Also, I love how waffle and marble comes up in the beginning to say hi and waffle says bye in the end (marble was too occupied with the carton… hehe) =) Enjoy!

That video was so cute! I love how they get a method of taking turns flipping it lol it didn’t take them long to figure that out. My egg carton has sloped holes so Franz couldn’t just roll it to get the pellets out, he had to shake it! The carton also had holes that were *almost* big enough for him to get the pellets which made him go crazy. Your bunnies are so cute! I love their ears <3
sigh, I can’t get Nilly to play with it. Soooo, I will up the stakes, I will make her some of her favorite treats. If I can find the original thread, I will repost the recipe, I haven’t heard about a bun not liking them yet!
ok, found it!
It is called How to Make Nutritional Rabbit Treats-
Place two small carrots and a banana in a blender and process on “puree” until very smooth. Add a half- cup of rolled oats and 1/2 C of your rabbit pellets into a grinder and grind up very fine. Blend until smooth with the carrot/banana mixture and roll out between two pieces of waxed paper, then cut into small cookies. Cover a cookie sheet with foil and place the unbaked cookies on the sheet. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. and place the cookies in teh oven. Turn overn off after 30 minutes and let the cookies remain in the oven until cool.
I was lazy and just spread it out over the foil and baked it as a whole thin blob! Then I just broke it off into pieces to store. Nilly loves it!
sounds great! I’m totally going to make those
I will have to warn you though, the buns can smell them cookie and they are like a cat with catnip. At least my Nilly is anyways! lol. She ran up to me every time I entered the kitchen! lol. I always cook them at night, then leave them in the oven over night to cool and break apart the pieces in the morning. She was a happy bun this morning!
wow sounds tasty! i’m gonna have to make those for my buns too!
thanks was so funny. Im gonna save the next one we get. normaly i give the top to the pigs and the other half to malachi.
I hate to be a bad guy. I took a Safe Food Handlers course in August, 2010, and it was mentioned that salmonella bacteria can be present on the outsides of eggs which means also on the inside of the cartons. I know egg cartons have been used in kids’ crafts for years and probably nothing bad would happen as a result of using an egg carton for things other than its original intent, but since my course I look at things a lot differently than I used to . . .
Hah, I tried that with a few pieces of bananas and closed the lid. And My dear Mellow didn’t even try. She sniffed it a little and just hopped away.
Still a good idea
That’s interesting about the salmonella.
I wonder if it can be killed by something like a white vinegar and water spray? Or washing it in something and rinsing and then leaving it to dry? Cardboard can retain it’s shape and dry if not soaked through. Seems easy enough to clean if the right viral cleanser that’s not harmful for bunnies is used.
I used to have turtles and frogs as a kid. The turtles were free roaming. I played with then every day giving them kisses and never washing my hands and I never got sick lol. They swam almost every day in clean water though. The salmonella on reptiles is naturally occurring and can’t be washed off according to vets. I think that as long as your immune system and that of your bunnies is ok that I wouldn’t see a problem… That’s just me. I think ppl read too much into the salmonella thing. Salmonella is everywhere, especially in dirt. It’s something that takes advantage of compromised immune systems. If it means not letting your pets roam around then I would say the small risk is totally worth it. Also, It has to be ingested. I don’t think it lives long in air on dry surfaces. I would be more concerned about the bunny hurting the turtle. I had a stray cat/ kittens running around with the turtles and they were afraid of the turtles lol. One time the cat took his hidey spot and my boy turtle hissed and charged with his mouth open lol. They never had issues though. If it were Franz, I think he would be mean to the turtle…
I totally posted that in the wrong spot lol… Meant for the person with the Russian tortoise. Also…. If yoi eat cookie dough and such you eat raw eggs. I’ve never been concerned about egg salmonella, they just warn because it’s a possibility and they need to cover their butts. The eggs are washed in high heat to clean the poop off before they go in the cartons. Sorry, I’m like mad tired! I want to see the results to te BB contest!!! *cough I hope Frankie wins cough don’t tell Franz* >..>
If you’re worried about Salmonella, you could try sticking the egg carton in the oven to toast those suckers and/or put it in the freezer for a while? Just be careful and make sure you don’t accidentally incinerate it, lol.
Agreed with cactuspancake on Salmonella though; Salmonella, like E. coli, is everywhere. It’s just certain virulent strains that cause disease, and even then, it’s only more likely to be a problem in immunocompromised individuals. While it’s good to be safe, I wouldn’t be super worried about the egg cartons.
cactuspancake, I know which post you meant here. did you copy this into it yet? Just copy your reply and paste it into a reply on that post instead. Been there, done that.
cactusancupcake, as the person with the Russian tortoise, thanks! 😀
Spencer really enjoyed the egg carton treat toy. I got some really cute videos too. Kate was less excited, but she hung around and waited for Spence to open it and then dove in for treats, lol. So thanks for the idea!
