As some of you know I lost Basil and I am looking for another bun to rescue… I found one that tugged my heart!

“A tri clorored rex needs new home” 4 years old, shy and timid living in a modified BIRD CAGE! he never comes out and he cant stand up if he wanted to! GAHHH! I wanted to scream! I dont know If I can take him he is much larger than the size range I was looking for. I notified many rabbits rescues to see if they could take him out of there! Poor Baby I was glad to see that he was FAT really FAT but thats because he cant move! grr! he on my watch list though!

I feel too that crowding or depriving a creature of the liberty to move is one of the very bad forms of abuse. So common and yet so cruel. Is this rabbit bigger than Basil was?

Yes, that is abuse! Have you gotten any responses from the rabbit rescues?

Zeus was also in a shamefully small cage when I adopted him:

He could not lay down fully stretched out, and he could not sit up straight or periscope.  He had nothing in his cage but a feeder that was too small for him to fit his head into (if he wanted to eat, he had to dig out the pellets out of the feeder, then find the pellets in the bedding, and a water bottle.  No toys, hidey house, enrichment at all.

I don’t understand how people think it’s ok to keep animals like that.  I hope the bun you describe gets out of that situation, fast.  He may be bigger than the ideal bun you’d want, but perhaps you can consider taking him on.  Zeus is waaaay bigger than I expected, I was told he was a Holland Lop and chances are he’s either a Mini Lop/French Lop cross or a pure French Lop.  But I love my big bunny boy.

Would you consider taking him even though he’s bigger? Bigger buns don’t really need more room than smaller buns generally – they’re often less active, so the same size pen and run area will work (unless you’re talking about a huge bun, like a flemmie, but a 10-12lb bun isn’t really that large compared to a 5lb bun).

Keep buns locked in tiny cages is one of my biggest issues with bunny treatment – if you don’t adopt him, I hope somebody does who will give him more room.

Size isnt much of a issue except I would be concerned that he still wouldnt have enough room with tha cage I have because of his size hes like a 9 pounder! Basil was a tiny mini rex, 4 pounds, I would SO take him but he is so frightened of other animals from not being properly handled and cared for I would hate to take him and my cat scare him to death or the sight of my lab scare him to death she said he is very shy and timid. I have gotten a reply on some of the rescues and they said they would be contacting the owner to see if they can help re-home the bun quickly or have the owner surrender him. The cage has three levels but he only has 2ft wide and 1.5 tall in each level so moving isnt easy. He is a rex not a mini rex and he is a BIG boy for a rex too  I think he is a mix.  Im glad the rescues are going to do something about it!

Who puts a rabbit in a bird cage, looks at it, and thinks, “Wow, I’m doing a great job!”

                    I hate people.

Good work PuddleJumper for getting things moving. I was going to say I’d be tempted just to get him then work with a rescue of rehoming him.. You are wise not to have done so given his fear of other animals. Kudos! Fingers crossed for this fella!
