How do I keep water from freezing? I have chickens in my horse barn, no horses. A section of the barn was turned into a work shed and now a chicken coop. The chicken’s water freezes unless there is a heat lamp over it.

I want to have rabbits in the horse section in large hutches, but I cannot add heat to it. So how do I keep their water bottles from freezing??

This is an indooor rabbit community so our expertise is focused on how to keep rabbits inside the home.
There are heated water bottles you can buy or order at feed stores, I think the brand is called Farm Innovators. If your water freezes there are other considerations to make, mainly how to keep your rabbis themselves warm. A hutch does not provide enough space to set up a bale of straw/hay to burrow in for warmth. Are your rabbits bonded? It is very important outdoor rabbits are kept in bonded pairs or trios to give them company as well as warmth.

I do not have the rabbits yet. I was going to make a 5ft by 2ft or 6ft by 3ft hutch. A closed section with bedding & water. That section should be warmer than the play area. I was thinking of having them in the garage for winter, but not sure if my fiance will agree to that. Summer months are also too hot in the garage, barn would be best then. Basement is cool, but carpeted and definitely no rabbits, none of the pets are allowed down here.
The hutches would be in the barn, not much difference than the house, since we do not cool or heat it. We only heat the basement by fireplace, summer time, all windows stay open 24/7, rest of the house chills or heats like the weather outdoors.

I think if you cannot keep them inside where it’s safe and the temperature is controlled you might want to reconsider adopting them.

It sounds like you need to be married to your fiance first and iron out your positions regarding pets. It is important to provide optimal conditions for them, so if you need to find compromises to allow them to live in comfort and good health for many years, they can be discussed and planned now, before an animal is miserable or you have arguments or heartbreak. Figure out what is your mutual priority, and work on that for now. You may find that it’s not feasible at first, but in a few years your both live in a bigger arrangement where pets can be added to your little family with their own room.

Rabbits sure do like to dig, but you could get lots of blankets to put down, so if your future bunny does dig, bunny digs into the blanket.

I agree with the others.. bunnies should not be inside of a hutch and outside. I hope you can find a compromise.

Agreed, if the water is freezing int eh barn, and if it gets that hot outside there int eh summer outdoor bunnies are not a good thing. Best to have them inside, where you can interact with them more and play with them anyway
