Dakota’s been losing hair for a few months now.  At first we thought she was just shedding a lot, but looking at her she’s got almost no top coat left although her undercoat is fine.  The top coat she has left is very sparse, like an old man’s hair starts to thin.  Just the odd long hair sticking out here and there.  So she sees the vet tomorrow to see if they can figure out what’s going on.

Here’s a picture of what she should look like about this time of year, and what she looks like now.  You can see the bits of long hair she has left on her torso, and some on the backs of her legs.

She’s about 6 1/2 I believe. And yes it’s very unusual, we’re just starting winter so she should be getting more hair not losing it. We had quite a warm fall so when she was losing hair then I thought well this weather has gotten her system all turned around and she’s shedding but… she’s never shed to this point before.

This is what my parent’s (my) dog looks like. It breaks my heart, but in his case, it’s just old age couple combined with some dry skin. He’s over 12 years old. The vet gave a prescription for some kind of special wash, but other than that and grooming, there’s not too much he said we can do.

But in her case, 6 is really young. I’m interested to hear what the vet says.

Well the vet took blood for testing – bloodwork panel done there is as stellar as can be, no clues there. Vet suspects either hypothyroid or Cushing’s, they’ve sent some blood to a lab to test for hypothyroid and we’ll see what that says. Total damage to the credit card today: $390 for the consult and the tests. *sigh*

Cushings? That’s weird because in horses it’s the opposite and the horse constantly has a winter coat. Our 36 year old horse had it before he passed on into horsey heaven.

Vibes for Dakota! She’s very pretty.
