I was looking at cute bunny pictures online and one was attached to this blog about owning bunnies. I read it and this person was bonkers! Okay, maybe not. But it still hurt my heart to see all the info he was telling the world. Stuff like: “The best way to determine if you are financially ready is to add the cost of the bunny, the cage and the occasional vet visit when something goes wrong. Then the cost of pellets and optional hay and veggies, if you’d like. Find a picture of a cute bunny and try and find one like it and you’ll be happy.”  Really?  They recommended picking the color first before the picture. It never mentioned researching about the animal before-hand, or the adoption option and recommended wire bottom cages. I wrote back and refered anyone who read the article to the HRS website and professionally rebutted everything I could prove wrong.  I wanted to share my experience somewhere and thought it’d be okay to let off some steam.  (I don’t think I broke the rules because I’m not writing about anyone on BB…just someone out in cyberspace who was very misinformed. Right? )

Some people got some weird ideas about buns I tell ya.   Like in Mary Poppins was it we saw the other nite   the one about the magic and the flying bed.

Well they were picking bunny up by the ears.

Oh, bed knobs and broom sticks?

The lady I adopted Bun said that when they showed her in 4H the judges picked her up by her ears….and uhm …her ears are 2 inches long max….I can’t even imagine.

People will always have different ideas. This person at least mentioned vet care. I think it’s good that you referenced HRS.

Well, I think that the vet care is a good recommendation – it’s far too often overlooked – people think that even if they get a baby rabbit from a breeder, it will be 100% healthy and that’s just not the case. My thought having spent a ton of money on vet care is to think of this FIRST AND FOREMOST.

Good for you for sharing your thoughts with them too.

^^^Rabbits from breeders (as well as any other type of animal) may even be LESS healthy than accidental, mixed breed bunnies… breeders are breeding over and over to get the LOOK they want, they are not breeding for healthy traits. People don’t think of this.
