Sooo the dog I found friday (stray) is most definitely pregnant and I don’t even have to see the vet tomorrow to check. Five beautiful healthy nursing wriggling talking puppies born today. We just finished labor and she and pups are great. I was/am a nervous wreck all day-she was great. She did everything herself and I just petted her and kept her company. Sooo yeah…I’ll keep you posted!

Scratch that -I need SIX names. But now we’re definitely done labor-been three hours since the last pup and she’s stopped panting and all the labor stuff So six Halloween names are needed!!

And… yeah. no pics? :o(

Coming up tomorrow I think. Momma is finally resting and I got her moved into our other bathroom. Cannot have her in the bathroom she gave birth because we shower in that bathroom and I think the heat and humidity would be bad for pups-also with moving her I was able to set her up better and clean up the birthing bathroom! She moved well, I just packed up her puppies and she followed us-what a good momma!

I just put candy out on the front steps and put a sign up not to knock on the door-so it’s a quiet halloween and I never did get my decorations up

They are just beautiful, only two are identical so I’m working out a way to tell them apart. The others have different white markings. I’ve got her puppy food and she’s eating and drinking, pups are nursing. And I have puppy formula and bottles just in case. (Thank you parents and Dave for running around getting me supplies and helping me emotionally through all this!! lol) What a day!

How lucky for these dogs to be taken in by someone. Can you imagine — a a litter on Halloween night, outside, exposed in the city??
Someone may have dumped her because she got pregnant.

I know Petzy-it’s disgusting. Although warm today it’s freezing outside now.
I’m actually happy she had them here-it was yucky and terrifying but it went fantastic-she’s a great mom.

LOL Yeah probably-she’s skinny so she’ll need even more food then she would have needed. We got her puppy food today so that should help

Gosh I would keep them all if I could! But I think I would feel like a traitor finding her a home and keeping a puppy…so if anyone gets to stay it will likely be her (Don’t tell Dave that Im scheming!) :p

I remember growing up in Edmonton, Mom would make sure all the cats, especially Bug, who was a black cat, were inside and couldn’t get out when trick or treaters came by. Far too scary for pets on Halloween

Walking my dog in a city park a few years back, I found a mutilated cat the day after Halloween. He was a grey and white tabby cat. He even had an ID tag. The owner said he had been in her yard on Halloween morning but then never came inside for his dinner… he had been napped and processed in a sick Halloween way.

Pictures and video uploading. Duly noted and changing title LOL!!!

So we had a vicarious vet exam today-I took the pictures and video in when Noot went in for his recheck. She is amazed everything went so well, and doesn’t want to see them until four weeks (for first shots and worming) unless theirs an issue. I was really flattered when she said she wouldn’t see anything I didn’t and that she trusted my observations and noticing things She suggested wet puppy food and Missy is loving that. Small amounts.

Building her a puppy box tonight so that if she wants to she can move away from the puppies and rest. I got those foamy puzzle peices to make the floor softer, and shelving to make the edges (NIC cubes have just to big of squares).

Got a scale and weighed everybody-the smallest is right on one pound-454 grams. And the biggest is 578!!! These are big babies. We’re 10% uploaded in photobucket so soon pictures and video!!

Airhead!!! Can you tell I haven’t slept yet??? Noots eye is completely healed-my vet and the vet techs were amazed. We did a dye test (Very cool to see and he was great) and they just can’t believe how quickly it healed!!!

OMG, Lesley…I cannot tell you how these pix bring back memories…I swear that lady dog is almost exactly like my dear Dusty in the face. In fact, if she had a bit more weight on her and were a more dun brown color with black striations…she would be the spitting image. *sniffles*
And the puppies…OH THE PUPPIES…my gosh they are almost like her pups looked too! Mostly the brown colored ones…except for the runt, who was my fave and had white spats on her feet…and Taiku and Willow, who were husky marked black and blond, respectively…and my precious Bear, who I never should’ve given away, who had his papa’s fur and his mama’s color. (outright weeping now)

What beautiful babies! And what an angel you are on this devilish day! God bless you! When mama is rested and the puppies are full and happy, there is no greater feeling in the world for all. Looking forward to more pictures (I can’t access video, my connection is too slow…boo!) when all are ready to proceed.

Have a nice glass of wine, dear, or two or three…you deserve it! And Dave too, definitely!!!

I am a sucker for any runts or strays, so if you didn’t grab that outside one again and latch it onto breakfast, I will be upset.

That must be the happiest looking mother dog I think I have ever seen. She literally is smiling. How wonderful for her to have found a new home, plenty of warmth and food, and have a healthy litter. She looks like she’s in heaven.

And yes, the video worked well for me here. Just read your post about what the vet said. That’s cool. I think Noot had his eye heal so fast so he wouldn’t miss seeing all the action going on in the house.

Those are very large healthy looking puppies. I’m amazed they are only 2 days old (or one in that video). Plump puppies.

SOOOOOOOO I found out where Missy belongs and what happened.
 To tell you the truth when I got the call I panicked because are they going to demand her back? Tonight? No way no how!!!….what do I do?

But it’s all sooo good!!!

Missy was a reserve dog.
There is a rescue group here who buys dogs from a reserve near here that is particularly abusive to animals, and tries to catch those who’ve been dumped in the dump by the reserve. Missy was one they’d worked on catching for weeks because they saw that she was pregnant.
She was placed in a foster home nearish where I found her (About six clicks or so) and escaped friday afternoon (she was only caught and put in care on Wednesday night) when the lady went to visit her sister out of town who has cancer-and her husband was in charge. Husband didn’t phone her to burden her with the dog going missing because (typical man…) thought he’d find the dog. So the rescue just found out last night that the dog was gone and everybody panicked-and the husband is in the proverbial dog house.
They are totally comfortable with her staying here until we can’t have her or until she weens. They want to support me with their vet and pay costs, or will allow me to see my own if I pay cost. They want to bring food and anything I need. And they will take her if I decide it’s too much or she can stay as long as I’d like. The woman who runs the rescue sounds awesome and we are meeting up this week, and also discussing me being involved in their rescue in the future. Oh I’m also allowed to veto a potential home for the pups if I don’t like them-she offered to let me help with adoption etc.

I think it went awesome and I feel so relieved.

So -I have a shelter backing me up for care and adoption. I now know why she was so skinny (she’s actually in great shape for a reserve dog sadly) and she can stay as long as I can handle…and I might just help do some dog rescues on the reserve maybe!

I don’t understand what a reserve is. At least for dogs. Please explain.
I also am mystified by the shelter buying animals from the reserve. Are they abused, then go to a reserve, or are they abused by the reserve owners themselves? Confusing.
So, with MM’s caution in my head, I’m thinking that you might like getting involved with a new rescue group, but I would stay away from further involvement with the reserve. Proceed with caution.
(That poor woman who fostered her. What an ordeal for that couple.)

yup. it’s always good to be somewhat cautiously optimistic but even still… i think your situation is a dang good outcome! i’m so happy you’re not in it alone.

rabbitpam, i believe the ‘reserve’ k&k refers to is a native reserve. a simplistic explanation… the canadian government has dedicated lands to the native canadian tribes for them to live on with certain tax shelters as a pay-back for having taken over their land in past years. the reserves are policed by natives themselves and residents are – at least in ontario – typically impoverished. smoking and drinking and unemployment are unfortunately not uncommon. i guess animal care is a low priority. very sad.

Yep I’m pretty sure that’s what she means by reserve. Our humane society gets a lot of dogs and puppies that come from reserves. It’s kind of like a big communal hoarding problem. They often run free, they’re usually not speutered, and what ends up happening is that you get a pack of dogs breeding like crazy and no one really looking out for them.

Sorry I didn’t want to be not PC. Their are Indian reserves here-and Sask and all over. But like many the people don’t keep their animals in good shape, do not spay neuter, use them in dog fighting, abuse them for fun etc. It’s terrible. And there are so many issues with why that happens that I won’t judge but yes they are terrible places for animals.
But technically they are their animals. So in general rescue groups who ‘work’ reserves-have to buy the dogs, usually going through a social worker who knows the people on the reserve. It’s different on different reserves, but technically it’s federal land and it’s their own law.

But yeah BBM & S&A explained it well!!

Ah I know -I think I will heed your words. I want to help and the stories are sad. But if she’s not registered non-profit or charity I’m not touching it with a ten foot pole….

Thanks for the explanation guys. We have Native American reserves in the US too, of course. I didn’t think of that. Makes sense that the animals would become more in the wild, since in bad economic situations the pets are usually the first that people can’t afford to care for, and often let free to fend. then breed of course. The conditions on reserves always sound so heartbreaking to me. It’s a trap of poverty. Locally a tribe has saved itself with a very lucrative casino that is thriving and the profits are divided among all proven tribal members.
