I love to browse bunny supplies and whenever I come across those bunny starter kits I love to check out the contents to see what they decided to put in. They generally don’t have any any supplies in them that I would use. So, just for fun I decided to make my own starter kit. If I knew someone that was getting a bunny for the first time and I wanted to put together a starter kit for them this is what I’d put in it and why:

First I’d include an x-pen because it can be used as a pen at first and then even if someone upgrades to a crate, cubes, or indoor hutch they can still use the pen for bunnyproofing.

I’d include 2 rag rugs. I’ve found them to be more shred-resistant than fleece blankets for those chewers and digger (yes, Smokey, I’m talking about you.) Two, so you still have one when the other is in the wash.

An unpeeled wicker house because it can be used as a hidey hut, an activity to keep bunny busy and gives him something else to chew on besides the carpet, baseboards, people etc.

A hanging ball to hold greens. Another fun filled activity for bunny.

Roll in the hay for over the litterbox. I find them neater than the hay rack. And Newton really enjoys his, so he highly recommends it as a hay dispenser.

This double crock is great for water and pellets.

A big bag of timothy pellets

        40oz bag of timothy hay

I like this litterbox  for it’s easy in/easy out bunny access. Keeps litter coralled well, big enough for Smokey and Bandit to hop in together, but doesn’t take up too much room either.

A 40lb bag of wood pellets because they’re cheap and absorb odor really well. The only drawback I’ve noticed is that they are hard on the feet, but we’ve solved that problem by covering the pellets with hay when the litter is changed.

I figure it’s about a $100 setup. Just needs a bunny and some greens. Did I forget anything?

I would buy your starter kit.

I can’t think of anything you forgot, it seems like you got every thing there.

That’s awesome! Nowhere do they sell starter kits like yours and yet it’s the perfect thing!!!!

               Good job!

The great thing about an x pen is it is so easy to travel with.  We have a rule–if the bunnies can’t come with us then we don’t go.  We only got the x pen about a week ago, and that was due to the bonding process with the girls.  I wish I had an x pen a long time ago, because the cage takes up a lot of space in the van.

So yes, if I had the option to buy an x pen starter kit instead of the cage starter kit, I would have went with yours!!

The only thing I’d add is a litter scoop, but that’s no big deal.

I think this is great. I guess my one question would be though where do you hang the hanging ball? On the side hanging down from the x-pen wall?

Oh, yeah, a litter scoop. I must have forgotten because every time I come at the box with the scoop I end up saying “Aw, to heck with it!,” and dumping the whole box. They’re very thorough with their use of the litterbox and there’s hardly enough fresh pellets worth scooping around.

It’ll clip onto any rung of the x-pen. I clip mine to the wire on the inside of their hutch opposite the litter box. It just hangs on the wall and they’re pretty happy with it.

There was actually a US rabbit supply store I found online once that sold starter kits pretty much like this one, with xpens instead of cages etc.

I can’t seem to find it again now that I’m actually looking for it though LOL maybe someone else knows what I’m talking about?

Oh yeah? If you happen to run across it, could you post it? Sometimes I hear about people getting or thinking about getting a rabbit and it’d be great to be able to suggest a nice place to buy an easy setup.

I’ve been searching for it for 30 minutes now and can’t find it… I just remember when I saw it I thought, “I really wish I had seen this before setting up Sammy’s whole pen” lol

It pretty much had everything necessary. I’ll try and take another look tonight.

It was called a rabbit deluxe value pack or something like that, definitely came with a pen and there were different tiers of how complete and also how expensive it got.

That’s ok. I know how that is. I can never find anything when I’m looking for it. Good to know it’s out there anyway.

you could also include an untreated wooden beam of pine for chewing. It could run across the pen resting on the cross bars of the panels and you could attach the hanging ball to it with a beaner.

I think this post shoud be in the habitats section.
