As many of you know, PitStop is officially a free run house bun, he lives in the upstairs of our home mostly in the living room.
The only problem is he is a pooping machine, I’m not even sure he knows he’s dropping them as he runs around or even just naps. I sweep them up multiple times a day in a dust pan and put them in one of the litter boxes.

Despite the pooping, the hubby and I have agreed that the happiness he bring to us living upstairs outweights sweeping up poops.
Now my issue, I am a little embarassed and wonder how other non-rabbit people visiting us will think about it. How do you explain litter boxes in your home? Or stray poops he may leave while they are there?
We’ve not had any non-rabbit people over since he started living full time upstairs, but we may have this weekend.

I don’t want friends to not want to come to my house b/c they think it’s disgusting my little guy drops a turd while they are there, is there a good way to explain this?
Like I said i clean it up constantly, and we don’t have kids so I don’t have to worry about babies finding ‘treats’ on the floor. :p

Hmmm I’m not sure what the best way of explaining that to others would be, and my bunny is 100% litter trained so I don’t have that experience, so I’ll let others help with that.

I did want to suggest that you should invest in a dust buster. They even make some nice ones (although more expensive) which look almost like part of the decor. It would make picking up stray poops faster and more handy.

I don’t explain it to anyone. All my friends and family know of my bunnies, and if they issues with me having pets, I just bring up the disgusting habits THEIR pets have.

You could pick a few up while they are there and kindly show them how HARMLESS bunny poop is.

I dare them to do that with cat turd or dog logs…

Most of my friends are animal people, so even if they don’t know much about rabbits they don’t think it’s disgusting. I think if there are unexpected poops on the floor you can just clean them up right away and say that’s just part of having a rabbit, as long as you laugh it off it’s no big deal. As long as the floor isn’t covered with turds, no one is going to care except for people that have problems with animals. I had to go through the worst when Bun-Bun peed on my friend the first time he met him! But now that’s one of my friend’s favorite stories to tell, he thinks it’s hilarious.

I could pretend to pick one up and eat it… that might work? LOL… eewww

I just would hate for people to not visit b/c they don’t get he’s just a bunny. If i could make light of it the first time or two people come over I’m hoping it won’t turn them away. I mean if people are real icked out, well then they don’t need to come over :p

I do have a Dust Buster… well it’s kinda big actually LOL… I’ll have to find a place to put it, I used to use it for dust when i had a gerbil room (they are so dusty when you have 20+ all chewing cardboard).

OOOORRR….. I adopt another dog, they clean up Rabbit poop quickly! :p

I’d just explain that he is litter box trained, but rabbits instinctively leave droppings here and there to mark their territory. because that IS what they do. Like cats marking/rubbing things or dogs sniffing people’s butts. LOL Both things are instinctive to them. May be annoying or gross, but there’s not really any help for it.

I just tell people they can’t help that they have fuzzy feet and sometimes poo goes in random places….even though I really know that probably didn’t happen and they just poop’d because its WAR!!!! I find that easier to tell people since they won’t understand the territorial poo thing. They would say…why would you have a pet that constantly poops when it needs territory? Or something like that.  I try my best to always pick up before introducing them to friends/family but I think most people know buns are poo machines. Just show them the litterbox and hopefully they will be impressed with that  Not to mention I bought the largest bottle of hand sanitizer available at the store just to pick up poos and not have to run off to the bathroom constantly. All my friends and coworkers know about my bunnies so I don’t think anything is a surprise to them….although my dad said my rabbit “problem” is embarassing to him. He has been known to eat dog food by accident… he is very health concious since he was in the Olympics in the 70’s and he read “nutricious, vitamins, healthy …blah blah” on this sample bag of dog food and ate it ROFL!!! He did it again with that nutra-balance stuff because it looks like a roll of liverwurst and is kept in the refridgerator LOl…poor dad…..I should prank him with some rabbit poop….Look dad!!! Peppercorns! Try them they are spicey!!  He didn’t mean to eat the dog stuff…he wasn’t reading the label and just eating….It’s the family joke.

I see a bunch of red underlines on my spelling mistakes and now it won’t fix them so …it’s 2am pardon them!

Hmm, how about saying that PitStop does it when there are strangers because he wants to protect his territory but otherwise he is 100% litter trained?

I hate telling people that mine do leave some poo outside a few times a day (we have a bit of a poop war going on here at the moment), because it just feeds their negative outlook on house rabbits, so I always make something up. I sometimes say, that they are not feeling well, so they are pooping a bit today Or just pretend that it has never happened before If people show a real interest in bunnies, I am more honest, but most people who come to visit us are not friendly towards pets, and I don’t want these people to spred the message that bunnies should be outside in a hutch, because they are disguisting.

Lintini, your story about your dad eating dog food had me laughing so hard! That’s hilarious.

I think as far as what to tell your visitors… I don’t want to tell you to lie…. but sometimes with people that don’t get animals… it might just be easier to say something like what Karla suggested, sweep it up, and move on. I wouldn’t recommend using your hands to pick up the poops though. Even though we all know that bunny poos are just processed hay and veggies, there’s still that “ick” factor that would turn a lot of people off… Poop on the floor is one thing, poop on your hands that you used to cook their dinner and that they have to shake as they walk out… yeah, not so appealing, even if they know you washed your hands right after.

Lintini, he ate it not once but twice? lol Yeah, I can see how he’ll never live that down!

@ Andi, I’m probably too late to this thread. My suggestion might be a bit radical… Not viewed too kindly by us rabbit lovers… but while these guest stay, why don’t you limit Pitters area to say, one or two rooms?

                            The potential benefits may be:
                            – You won’t be running around with dustpan, so can spend time relaxing with your guests
                            – You want have to worry about them stumbling upon rabbit turds anywhere.
                            – Pitters might be a bit put out at having strangers in his zone, so keeping them separated may prevent poop war.
                            – Restricting his space for a few days won’t hurt and might even benefit his long term litter habits.

Anyway, I’d be interested in what did come up with your non-rabbit guest after the weekend.

You could say he is just a little nervous not being used to the visitors yet.

RAbbit people came to visit once and Cotton weed on the floor.  They took it in stride and said oh he must be nervous.  Hmm not bad idea.

When he left a poo I picked it up and tossed it in his box thinking nothing of it.  Even though they are bunny people the mother made a face like it shocked her.   And yes I would rather pick up bunny poops with my hand and dog n cat poo definitely with a paper towel it is just different for bunnies they seem harmless.

I pay no mind I just pick it up with my hand.  No biggee.  Then I go wash my hands.  Or course when I think of it I use a paper towel which is a rare moment   lol.

Ha ha, I just remembered, when I first was caring for Bun-Bun (when he was staying in our clinic) I would put on medical gloves to clean out his cage… not anymore! I dig into the piles of urine and poop, and just wash up afterwards. But it took a couple weeks for me to start picking up the poos with my bare hands, so we shouldn’t expect non-rabbit people to accept that, it does seem a little strange! I guess it’s better to use a dustpan to sweep up stray poos when guests are over, so they don’t lose their lunch!

On a side note, I was just cleaning my living room (sweeping before mopping) and Bun-Bun was asleep in the top level of his condo. He woke up, looked around, pointed his butt out the side, and peed an ENORMOUS stream of urine onto the living room floor (seriously, the amount a human male would pee after drinking a 6 pack of beer.) What the hell is this? Every time I think his urination issues are fixed, something like this happens Although he recently has started falling asleep on my stomach (while I lay on my back on a heating pad due to back problems.) So I guess that cuteness makes up for the pee everywhere… sigh…

Maya  you have back problems too?  Heat makes mine worse.  Glad you found something to help.

Ah your bunny shot a stream of urine on your floor as you were cleaning.  What a stinker.

@bunnytowne – Actually the thing that would fix my back problems is a weekly acupuncture treatment (you should try it!)… but since I’m doing it I very rarely get treated myself I’m not sure why my back is acting up, I’ve never injured it (just gives out for no reason) – I’m honestly too young to have these sorts of problems! My theory is that I weakened it from overstretching or over-exercising. Blah.

Yes Bun-Bun was very bad by peeing everywhere… I wish I had a video of it, I wasn’t even mad, just shocked that such a powerful jet of urine came out of such a tiny creature!

Well Pitters pooping has slowed down i think, at least it’s mostly in one area, not through-out the whole house LOL.

I put heat on my back too, it feels good at the time, but doesn’t do much for me in the long run. I would love to try acupuncture but right now it’s just chriropractic and sometimes massage.

OMG, I just began reading through this, although the title has intrigued me for a bit…lol.
Beka’s reply definitely had me rofl-ing….
Poor Maya! 0_o You know, I think I’ve mentioned before that Pip’s habitat is stacked onto Mimzy’s and is towering over my bed. I am waiting for the day that she foot flicks from the litterbox in the middle of the night and I wake up choking because I sleep with my mouth open. >.< But I find her litter and it's contents all over the place all the time because she has no qualms about sending it airborne. I think it's just part of their personality.

My family was completely grossed out when we first brought the bunnies home and had to deal with their messes. I think my daughter still doesn’t understand why they have to eat cecals, it is just awful to her. But I think I relatively quickly got used to picking up bunny poo with my hands and not feel revulsion. In fact, if a bun happens to be feeling under the weather, I will sift through the box just to be sure that eliminations are being completed successfully, and comparison of poo size is a must in such cases. I make it look very official and scientific.

But yeah, there are just too many folks out there who don’t seem to understand that bunnies are as much a companion animal as a dog or cat in the first place…try to explain territorial markings to them? Fergeddaboutit. Best just to give bun his own space so that never the twain shall meet.

Yes, trying to explain why teenage Bee is digging and making holes in my bedding is beyond my dad’s comprehension, let alone explaining territorial marking of poo’s on my bed. I still cant’ believe he thinks I actually sleep in rabbit poop. *rolls eyes 100 times* Yes father, I bathe in it too!!!

Pitters has now discovered my Bed, he’s never been big on hoping up onto anything, I’m working on sitting on the couch with him without him having a panic attack and things are coming along. Last night was the second time I found him on my bed by himself.
I was happy about it because I’d like to have him nap with me, but with new found territory comes the pooping… last two days the pooping in the bedroom and kitchen have increased LOL…

Just say that he is new to being upstairs and he has to mark his territory and the only thing you can do until he is satisfied that it is his space is to clean it up. Baxter has a very large space to call his own now and he was very much a pooper. He has been there for about 3 weeks or so now and he is not at all anymore. I’ll bet it will subside a little if not completely. Seriously though. People have dogs and their poop is so much more disgusting than a bunnies. Atleast bunnies don’t fart. When my brothers dog farts it makes you gag! Cats too. Kitty litter STINKS! I know that first hand now lol. Oh, not to mention a dogs anal gland leaking! YUK!!! So if they have any animals at all they shouldn’t be grossed out by small hard non stinky bunny poops. If they are not at all animal people they are probably just going to think you are nuts for letting a bunny run your house in the first place! lol

Yeah, act like you’ve never seen rabbit poop on the floor before. LOL “Well I never!”

Maybe Pitters could wear one of those “shiit happens” dog t-shirts.

                                                            hahahaha… hhmmm i wonder if he’d wear a $*&!? *thinking/plotting*
I doubt a diaper would work, I do have some from my handicap bunny who wouldn’t keep them on either. Bunnies look so funny (and pissed off) in diapers.

Andi thats a good one.   I love it.    What did you do to him  he never does that  rofl.

Maya       My hubby was a chiropractor.  He doesn’t massage my back much lately.  Mum got us  a neat  blue black massager has betteries and looks like it has 4 knobs to rub your back with.

Had problems since I was 24.   My violent ex slammed me into the corner of a desk caught my back just right.  Problems ever since. Anyhoo.  Pain and dissability don’t care who you are or how old you are.    A doctor told me usually the really active people get these problems.  Well I was quite the tomboy and very active.  Hope you feel better.

I would like to try accupuncture.   Kind of expensive for me though.  My ins. doesnt’ pay for it .which is no surprise

Personally, I think I’m a little weird when it comes to this. Lucy and I also have a poo war going on. She likes to poo RIGHT outside the cats litter box. I honestly wish she’d just hop in and go! But that’s another story. When we have people over, as far as I’m concerned, if you’re over to inspect my house, you can leave. The place isn’t dirty, and if there’s a stray “cocoa puff” on the floor, I pick it up and chuck it in her box. My husband used to find it disgusting. When we first moved in, she was obviously a little weirded out, and pooed in random areas like, mid jump and such. I’d walk around and just pick it up. He thought this was disgusting. Then I explained to him that I think picking up his dog’s poo (that frankly, looks like people poo) is absolutely repulsive to me. It smells, it mushes….ICK! I’ll take my cocoa puffs any day!

Most people think it’s cute when I call it that. I’ve even had people ask to hold some, if I’m picking it up off the floor. Odd, but at least they know 1. Doesn’t smell. 2. Isn’t mushy and wet. 3. Easily cleaned.

@bunnytowne Sorry to hear about your back… if your hubby is a chiro he could at least put the electro pads on, if he has that machine at home… that takes almost no effort and the electrical current helps to relax the muscles and make the nerves in that area calm down. Acupuncture is great but if you’ve had the problem many years it will take at least a month of treatments to fix. However, if you have an acute injury (strain or whatever) and catch it within a couple days, one or two treatments can be enough! After years, injuries set in and the body just gets used to that being the normal state. It’s tough. Hang in there!

@MissPinUp I would add one more number, 4. Bunny poop isn’t warm. I’ve picked up poo literally a second after Bun-Bun has dropped it and it’s room temperature. Honestly I don’t understand how this is the case, their body temp is pretty high (higher than ours anyway) but their poop comes out chilled? Tonight I picked up a bunch of bunny poo and stuck it right under my nose to smell it (I’m paranoid about my house smelling bad) but you can’t smell it even when it’s right there! It’s their pee that smells
P.S. your pic is so cute of the kitty and bunny, awww…. much better than my cat who smacks my bunny on the butt and stares daggers at him all day long…
