So this has been an issue for awhile. I’ve mostly just give in and let him go under the bed. But he occasionally digs the carpet, you know, and other destructive things. I tell him to stop and, you know, the cycle continues. It’s getting to a point where I’m not sure of the status of the lair under there, and I live in an apartment. So I really have to do something. He lives in an x-pen and I let him out when I’m home and usually he wants to be social, but inevitably goes under the bed at some point.

So, I’ve tried two ways of keeping him out. I situated the pen so I could open it up and divide the room. That works fine, just gets a bit annoying to have to replace it all the time. And I always end up, when I’m trying to get over the pen, tripping, or in some way injuring myself. I also tried a less noticable method….I got plastic garden fencing and put it under the bed skirt. But he figured a way through it. Plus it was really hard for me to move it to get at stuff I need to store under there.

So….*sigh*. I picking all y’alls brains for some ideas!

Well the easiest road it to let them have their way! You could put a large sheet of thick cardboard under the bed, then let him go under and dig at the cardboard instead.

Do investigate what he’s been up to under there. I’ve heard of rabbits making holes in the mattress and getting up inside.

Seriously! Wow, I wouldn’t put it past him. Although, the bed is actually a futon frame, so I’m not sure that he could get up to the mattress. The cardboard is a good idea, or maybe I could invest in a cheap area rug to put under the bed.

That could work. Even something large enough that the legs hold it in place. He may eventually dig or chew thru it though.

An area rug could work, but ONLY if he does not chew/digest the carpeting fibers. Maybe one of those thin indoor/outdoor carpets would work.

Yeah. The carpet I have in my apartment is, what do you call it?, really thready. Like it isn’t a low pile. So I’m thinking if I had an area rug that the threads are close together, he’d be less likely to want to dig and pull at it. But then again ya never know. And if I could do some arranging and organizing so there wasn’t as much stuff under there and it was less “interesting” to him, that probably would help too.

I just use NIC grids against my bed so that Jenny cant get under.

A pine board cut to size works well too if the grids don’t fit exactly. Just jam the right-size board under the edge of the bed.
