A friend of ours called this morning because she remembered we have bunz…need I say more?!  From the little she knows, their neighbor’s daughter got her kids a bunny and they brought it over to Grandmpa’s for a “visit”.  Well, Grandpa wasn’t much into it and it kept escaping and ended up being in their FRONT yard in a tiny cage.  The daughter was told it was a male, couldn’t remember his name, thinks it may have come from Mexico (?) with the “person” they got him from & had no clue how to care for it.  We quit asking questions so we wouldn’t lose our tempers, and brought him home.  His fur is matted pretty bad but his eyes are clear and he is VERY alert.  As soon as we placed him in the carrier we brought with us, he started munching on the hay & I don’t think has stopped for more than 10 minutes or so at a time.  He is also drinking lots of water so signs that he may be healthy with a little care looks promising.  We are not planning on introducing them to Gulliver & Lainey for now until we know he is OK & not carrying any disease, mites, fleas, etc.  I wanted to get him settled in before getting some grooming started, but he is SO at home already I’m going to get started soon.  I’m pretty sure I am going to have to clip his fur slightly unless someone has a good suggestion.  Would anyone recommend bathing him?  I know it isn’t good for them to get chilled and for the fur to dry completely, but we live in the central bay area of California & it is 95+ today but will cool to around 80 tomorrow.  I did give him a few pellets and of course hay (timothy/oat mix) that we had on hand for now.  I will probably introduce him to a small piece of kale, dandelion or italian parsley tonight.  We still haven’t decided if we are keeping him for sure – we are pretty busy already with our 2 bunz and cat but I have a feeling….  What breed do you guys think?  My hand is next to him in one of the pictures so you can see his approximate size.  I’m 6’2″ so I don’t have tiny hands!  They said they had him a few months…can’t remember when exactly so we also have no idea of his age.  I am anxious to get him sexed (or take a peek & figure it out) so we can name him…any ideas?  Once I groom him, I’ll post the “after” pictures.

Oh yeah, LOVES being picked up, held & petted…Ken just said he did his first binky!!!  MISSED IT!

I’ll check back later…and thanks in advance!!!

Oh, he’s so cute. I would ask the vet to demat him instead of shaving him.

Well my first thought was Jersey Wooley but he has long ears so I’m thinking he’s an angora mix with that long hair. He’s so pretty.

Thats funny, I was just thinking “Wow, his fur looks like my jersey wooley’s did when she was a baby!” Then I scroll down and see that it seems to be the consenus..SO adorable though! Good luck trying “not” to keep it!

I would vote angora from those bendy ears, I have seen that sort of curved/banana looking ear on some angoras. Maybe jersey wooley has that shape too? I don’t know, but with the longer fur and ears I thought at least part angora! But he looks a little smaller than I think angoras tend to be, unless he’s not full grown yet, so I’m not sure.

I am not too farmiliar with Jersey Wooley’s or angora mixes…off to check them out.  Its been awhile since I’ve read up on other breeds & fairly busy today & tomorrow.  Knowing Ken & I, doubtful we’ll surrender it so I’ll probably start asking for name suggestions.  So far we have been calling him dread (for dreadlocks) ’cause his fur similates the look right now .  Glad that will be changing!  We were not planning on shaving him, just hoping with VERY gentle care attempt to get the tangles out.  Most are on the surface except for by his hoppers.  Knowing how delicate their skin is, I know not to push it so I’ll be careful…if that doesn’t work we’ll see what a vet says.  We are strapped financially right now for big expenses, but plan on getting him checked out soon…if we keep him…hehehe – something very extreme would have to happen not to keep him – we’re suckers for bunz & he is adorable and SUPER SWEET (so far ).  What would you guys do for his diet not knowing his age yet?  He appears to at the least be a teenager, but then again I’m not sure.  He is quite alert and very agile.  Seems to understand that “something” is behind the closed doors down the hall.  Seems OK in the cage but we’ve given him free run of the hallway so far.  Gulliver & Lainey have the bedroom at the end of the hall & during the day free run of the family room.  We’ll have to set up my LAST spare bedroom somehow.  A friend of mine JUST stored a bunch of her things in it for a month or so but most is stacked on the bed.  Also, Lucy’s litter box is in there right now so we have (yet again) some shifting and re-arranging to do.  Well off to read & hopefully brush out the tips of “dread’s” fur…need a name quickly…

Oh goodness, I see my Jersey in this bun. (Jersey the bunny, not the breed.) She had that face when a younger.

I will just caution you about some of the things a newbie might bring. (Though as experienced bunny slaves, you have likely considered all this.)  Added veterinary cost and if young a future neuter. High maintanance of long hair breed. Possible litterbox challenges with it and your existing two. Possible failure to bond which means separate living quarters for newbie.
Ok, so that’s the negative but to out weigh this is the extraordinary bunny cuteness and fun that it might bring.
If you can do it, go for it. It will have a great home with you for sure!

Jersey Woolies would have a smaller ear like a netherland so I would vote that he’s an angora mix. Ears and face shape are not woolie like.

My initial thought was angora mix. Jersey a close second, but like Sarita said, the ears are just not there. I’m not an angora expert, but I think one breed has furry ears, one breed does not… so that might be helpful.

                              Regardless… he is AMAZING!

What a beautiful bunny! So glad he/she has a 2nd chance at a good life. With a little TLC, I’m sure the coat will look amazing in no time. I think Angora mix too, Jersey’s have little ears, but whatever breed he/she is = adorable!

A Satin Angora.   Satin Angora’s dont’ have fluffy ears get about 6 lbs and their hair grows to 6 inches.  That would be my guess.

I think that accounts for it loving being held and petted.   The satin’s I have seen are that way.   Very affectionate loves attention

Could also be a French Angora.

                                        Here’s a Satin:

I would bet this cute rabbit is one of those.

French Angora’s are bigger than Satin’s      The french are easiest to care for.  Right now hair on their ears either.

BT is good with these fluffy breeds. I bet she’s on the money with Satin Angora.

First, thanks for all the comments & interest & SORRY for the lag in updates.  YEP…still have HIM.  So much has happened & I keep putting off updating ‘cause I’m sure it will be lengthy.  We changed our minds MANY times, but only for a few minutes or so.  His personality is so different than Gulliver & Lainey were at his age – probably because they were fixed and bonded.  Our new boy (Mortymrr) is a cuddly bun & in the beginning spent most of his time with Ken & I.  We knew if all 3 bonded, we may have issues bonding again after Morty is fixed but it became impossible to keep them all apart.  We also thought our home was “Bunny proofed”, but boy were we not prepared for our new teenager!!!  The problem is he is so darn cute that he gets more laughs than discipline – not that it would work anyways!  Gulliver is the easy one & accepted him immediately, although very curious.  Lainey on the other hand is the queen here so there was a lot of charging him, slight nipping and generally making sure he knew who is boss.  We kept them separate unless one of us was with them but the last week or so they have been together during the day.  Lainey & Morty go outside every morning (weather permitting).  It is so cute how Morty mimicks everything Lainey does & follows her around.  He also has a large hole going and it is so fun to see them running & binkin’ together!  Gulliver didn’t like going out much until this last week.  When Lainey & Morty would go out the sliding door in their bedroom, Gulliver would go down the hall into the family room (their daytime area).  Now, he follows the other two out.  There is so much to tell, but I know pictures are what you all really want!  He has grown SO much…hardly a baby any longer, but so far still a lover & still lets us pick up and hold him.  He also jumps up on us if he really wants attention.  Oh yeah…getting fixed this Friday @ 7:30am…can’t wait!  One problem has been the poop wars that I had forgotten all about.  We plan to get on top of that once he has recuperated & we have them re-bonded…sure hope that goes as well as the first time!

                                                          The early days…

                                                          What a tail!!!

Thanks everyone!  I am so in love AGAIN.  His fur is angora so petting him is a treat.  All our bunz are really soft – big plus being able to hold Morty.  I also hope once he heals that no one will notice, but we’re prepared if not.  Ken is amazingly patient and works really close with them.  He can calm them down…bunny whisper .  Of course now I’m already worrying about Friday.  Our other 2 were fixed a month before we adopted them but I’ve been through many with my cats over the years.  I just don’t see how he is going to stay quiet although I am getting pain pills for him as the SPCA recommends it & I sure don’t want to see him in pain.  I bet Lainey & Gulliver will miss him while he recouperates.  They have still paired up & left Morty out a bit (so sad), so that is why I “mentioned” a 4th.  I doubt we will but Ken also “mentioned” it a few days ago.  We are already re-designing their room to fit Morty in better.  Once we get a few more boxes of cubes, Ken will add another story.  Also, Morty is growing so fast that when he stands on his hind legs (which is often), his head comes close to the top so we’ll have to rectify that as well!  I’ll post more pictures & let you know how his surgery goes Friday.

Once he gets settled in and comfy at your house, he will start grooming himself like crazy and have a little help from some friends ;-). (Rabbits under stress won’t care for themselves as much.) Thats what happened when we brought our Leo home from the shelter, his fur was very oily and coarse, but now its almost as soft as our rex’s.

Lainey and Gulliver probably have a long established routine. Also there’s the difference in ages with Morty being young and sprightly. That said, you probably will see a gradual change into a group rather then a 3rd wheel scenario. Of course, I won’t discourage you from getting a 4th if you feel that will be better all round!! lol

Its a GIRL !!!!!!!!  Boy were we shocked!  I’ve always heard that bunnies are difficult to sex, but I swear Ken & I saw something different down there.  We have a friend that knows a vet tech & she came over when we first rescued “him” and agreed with us…oh well!  We were still able to get “her” spayed today & she is home recouperating (sleeping).  I felt pretty stupid but was reassured that many people get it wrong.  So, now we need names.  We kept all the ones we considered for Lainey but somehow they just don’t fit her.  We almost went with Morticia so we could keep the Morty but once again, just doesn’t fit her personality.  Then we were thinking about a nosy neighbor that lived across the street when we were kids & was always in everyone’s business…her name was “Puz”.  Ken likes it & I actually can see her with that name too but I think more ideas is needed.  Its still impossible to refer to her as her …we keep having to correct ourselves.  Oh yeah…she weighed in at 5.6 pounds!  I can’t believe how quickly she grew and still looks so svelt.  Lainey & Gulliver on the other hand are little chubbies.  I’ll tell you one thing, “Morty” sure brought life into the other bunz – absolutely no time for boredom with her around!  She literally runs circles around Lainey & Gulliver as if to say “what now? what are we going to do?”.  She gets so excited and so cute to watch.

One last question, any tips on caring for her other than the obvious?  We did get some Carefresh because we usually use wood pellets with hay & were concerned about the discomfort if it pokes her tummy.  We moved her cage to the extra room and put large pen surrounding it but we’re keeping the cage shut for now so she won’t try to jump over the edge.  Once she moves around better we plan to put a fleece blanket over it so its soft against her tummy.  She has already eaten & had water but doesn’t show a ton of interest.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

It’s a good sign if she’s already had some. Try encourage her to eat (fresh greens or any favourites) but don’t worry too much if she just won’t. By the next day she should be looking for food herself. Hopefully you won’t need to use the cone. Not sure how practical they are, I’d be tempted to put in on them like a skirt then on the neck… :p Is it one of those soft cones?

Thanks jerseygirl.  I can’t believe how much I’m worrying…had MANY cats spayed, just not a bun yet.  She is usually so hyper that its weird to see her so sedate.  She has perked up slightly but we’ve been leaving her alone as much as possible.  The assistant said she had been eating already when we picked her up but not since we got home.  She did drink a tiny bit of water.  The cone is flexible plastic with a gauze tie but we are hoping she doesn’t mess with her incision so we’re not forced to use it.  Had not thought that through thinking she was a boy!  Anyways, I always wake up a few times during the night & she is in the bedroom directly next to me so I’ll be checking on her.  As far as Lainey, I think she just gave up!!!  She is so fast and can go forever so Lainey eventually just lies down although once in awhile she’ll chase her out of their littler box in the family room.  So important to her to be the one in charge.  I like Mrrtyl…very close yet more appropriate.  Puz Fuzz is cute too!

We got her bum shaved also.  The matting was up against her skin so working it out was impossible without hurting her.  I’ll get pics when she feels a little better & gets moving around.  How long will it take to grow back out?  It’s only from the base of her tail up an inch or two.  Wonder if it will itch like hair can when first growing back?

I’ve got a thread up in Q&A as I have an 11 week old Lionhead doe and I’m terrified of getting her spayed as I lost a boy bun 9 years ago under anaesthetic during getting him fixed. As to the name, what about Martina or Marty? My Babsy started out as Bobsy hehe after your story I wonder if she’ll end up being Bobsy again! I’m 99% sure she’s a she but she’s so fluffy round her downstairs furniture it is a bit hard to see!!!!!!! Anyway hope all goes well for all 3 of your babies and the rebonding xx

I am feeling a lot better about getting Babs done now as a few people have said here things have changed a LOT in the last 10 years but I think I’ll only relax when it’s over and done with! Could anyone recommend the best age to have her done? She’s only 10 weeks old now  XX

WELL, I opened the door this morning & SHE came RUNNING out of the room.  She had pulled the gate IN (she usually tries to push it out) & escaped.  BINKY galore!!!  We were told not to pick her up for 4 days so it was a bit tough rounding her up.  Evidently she feels good today!  Her tummy looks perfect so so far so good.  We put her back in the caged area after a bit & shes been fairly quiet.  When she first got out she ran to the sliding door in the Bunz room & almost ran right into the glass.  I would say it is safe to say that her recouperation went well…just going to be hard to keep her mellow for another day or so.  She also looks so funny ’cause of her shaved bum – her tail has a fluff ball on the end and now you can really see her HUGE hoppers.  I think we’re going to have a fairly large bunny!!

One thing, she has been acting perfect & her incision looks great.  I don’t detect any pain from her but I also know how they can hide it.  The vet gave us 3 days of pain medication (liquid).  I’m not sure whether or not to give her the last dose or not.  Part of me says to give it to her to be on the safe side, but when I look at her and watch her, I see NO actions showing pain.  In the beginning, she would start to stretch & then curl up quickly, moved slowly & walked a bit as well which we’ve never seen!  Well now I’m just rambling…
