        Sorry again!

I am just wondering what the healthy safe way to help Hugo gain his weight back is.  Does anyone have any opinions?  He lost his weight due to depression when his broher died and not from being sick.  He has seen a vet through the shelter and they said he was doing great.  Just need to fatten him up now.

Do I need to keep him on an alfalfa pellet for a while even though he is now an adult?  He is about 1 1/2 years old.  Or should I give him more timothy pellets throughout the day instead of what the bag states?

He will have unlimited timothy/grass hay and a good amount of fresh veggies as well.  Thanks again for our help!  Hopefully you won’t get too sick of me asking all these questions.

I wouldn’t do the alfalfa – I think once he gets into a routine and feels more secure he will naturally gain weight with the timmy pellets, hay, and veggies. You wouldn’t want a quick weight gain like you wouldn’t want a quick weight loss.

That what I thought but I wanted to make sure. I know the shelter put him on an alfalfa diet to help him gain weight and I wasn’t sure I liked that. I don’t know that they’d change it for me though. I wish I could bring him home now but our apartment only allows dogs and cats. I don’t know how I’m going to wait another 6-8 weeks!

If the shelter has him on alfalfa pellets now, are they continuing this for the next 6-8 weeks? He might have gained the weight back by then. When you bring him home, get some of the pellets they feed and start to mix them with the ones you want to use. This way his gut will adjust slowly to the change in diet.

Yes, just until we close on our house and I get a floor put in. Then I bring him home! I believe he was 13-14 lbs when they got him and he doesn’t feel like he could be more than 9-10 now. You can feel his spine when you pet him =( My poor baby. I just want him too be loved and as happy and healthy as can be.
