As I’ve mentioned, Chacha has a ruptured ear drum and was on baytril for 10 days. She was fine after the 10 days, and now all of a sudden, about a day ago, she is shaking her head again

The heat wave here in Washington isn’t making it any better either. She is on the bottom floor, the living room and I washed her veggies and bought it down for her, and she usually runs for the veggie plate. She didn’t today  She has had a fan on her for most of the day today. I’ve been grabbing pieces of cilantro and romaine to give to her and to eat. She does eat them, but not with the usual fierceness she usually does

She is currently sitting in her litter box, eating hay and I think she is pooping.

I’m really upset right now.. I do not know what to do.

First— take a deep breath. Bunnies can really stress us out with their health issues and the fact we have to really pay close attention — nerve wracking to say the least so I understand. If she is in fact pooping and eating that is a good sign.

My bunnies will eat less when temperatures rise, so that might be part of what is going on with her appetite–which means she may poop a little less, but the fact that you notice something is different means you should keep an eye on her. And of course if she stops eating and pooping, and/or becomes lethargic then things are more urgent and vet asap would be needed.

Could she have gotten too hot? How hot is it where she is?

As far as her ear, if she is just doing it all the time, then you may need to make an appointment for the vet.

            I see…

            Thank you, BB.

She has been sitting in her big cardboard box, just sitting in one spot.

As I go up into my room upstairs, it is really hot. The living room is cooler, and I have the fan on both her and I.

I’m going to get her to the vet tomorrow. Will be calling as soon as they open. Her poor ear I’m not liking this.

The fan by itself doesn’t help cool bunnies off since they don’t sweat, so you have to add another element to the fan — So for example—putting frozen water bottles and/or cold ceramic tiles (after being in the freezer/fridge) or dampen a sheet and putting it  in front of the the fan will help with cooling.  (see cooling tips in the bunny info section for examples of this)

If it’s hot, she may not feel like moving around… but obviously I don’t know for sure what is going on here and so I am glad to hear you will be ringing your vet.

Well, good news is, she has hopped out of her box and began to eat her veggies with her usual FIERCENESS.

I just want to hug her, but I think it will scare her lol.

I haven’t gotten much sleep lately because of my allergies, but my bunny comes first right now

I’ve given her a frozen water bottle. I’ve seen her lick it a few times, but nothing much. perhaps i should put something thin around the bottle.

She is hopping around more right now.

If you look after yourself it will benefit her too. Who else is going to look after so well if you suddenly can’t?. So please look after yourself too.

I got her in this morning around 10:45 am.

The vet examined her with the vet technican, and he was booked up all day, but made time to see my bunny.

Her left ear drum is INTACT and healed, the right is also, but there is some redness in the right ear

Chacha is on Baytril for 14 days this time.

Also, while he examined her teeth, he noticed that her back teeth are pointed a little bit. He said she needs to get more hay and also carrots to help the teeth grind down.

My bunny tends to munch a lot of hay during the course of the night (and finishes what I give her). She doesn’t finish all the hay that i put into her basket during the day, I am assuming because she is asleep.

I read before I got a dwarf bunny that it is a common problem for them to have teeth issues.

The vet tech told me that if the teeth does not go grind down (I have to make an appointment after I finish the Baytril afte 2 weeks), then my bunny will need some teeth filing.

                        My questions/concerns are:

Does teeth filing hurt a bunny?

My bunny doesn’t like carrots at all.. o_O;; I’m going to try it again, but I’m not sure if I can even get her to try it!! How are some tips for getting a bunny try something? She has never tasted a carrot.. Just sniffs it and runs!

It is common for rabbits to not eat as much during the hot weather? Chacha did not eat her greens right away last night, but after an hour, she started to nom nom on ’em. She normally runs immediately to the plate when I put it down on the ground for her. She has been laying down a lot and breathing fast and I’ve been trying to keep her cooled down.

Please have my little one in your thoughts

Good to hear the ear drum healed. Is ChaCha on limited pellets now or are you still reducing them? Cutting back on those should get her eating more hay. You could try some varieties that she can’t resist also.

Maybe try grate carrots and put them over hay or her pellets intitally. If she starts to eat it grated, you could then offer it in chunks. Though I wouldn’t thenk carrots would help that much for molar spurs…

I think they sedate them and usually them are given pain med for after. My vet has said some rabbits they see don’t even need sedating. The just handle molar trims no worries.

I’ve never heard of carrots helping with molar spurs…really only hay will, it’s the chewing motion of the hay. Of course, if the teeth are misaligned then hay will only slow down the inevitable molar filing.

My rabbit Pepe gets his teeth trimmed every 6 weeks and the vet has to be aggressive because he has very odd teeth and it takes him about 2 to 3 days to eat again HOWEVER if it’s just a light filing then it may not take that long. My vet does have to put Pepe under anesthesia and I would be concerned if you vet did not do this. My vet also does buprenex (pain med) and a kind of valium medication to relax him.

Well, my guess is.. the chewing motion helps lower the teeth, since carrots are nice and big o_O

My friend gave me some timothy hay. The texture is rougher than Orchard grass. I think i will start mixing some in with the orchard grass, even though I am allergic to timothy.

                              Is teeth filing pricey? O_o

jerseygirl, chacha is done with pellet decreasing. she just gets a tablespoon a day.
she enjoys meadow grass, which is sold in limited quantities online only but i should be expecting a bag to come in the mail this week sometime. she LOVES it.

I’ve seen ranges for this procedure all over the place. My vet charges about $200.00 each time for this procedure. You should ask your vet for an estimate though it could be wildly different.

He didn’t say the molars are misaligned, just a little pointed.
This morning I’ve put hay in many places around her pen, so I hope she eats it all.

I will get an estimate Thanks Sarita.

                                      Update:

I called to make Chacha’s follow up appointment for 9:15 am on Saturday July 24th. Friday will be her last day of Baytril. I am on this thing!

I got an estimate for a teeth filing, if she needs one. It is $150.00.

I hope she does not need one, but if she does, it is what she needs to live a long life. I do not want to lose my baby girl.

My friend gave me some Timothy Hay, she ignored it at first (she hasn’t gotten it since I got her, cos I’m allergic to it), but I put some on her blanket and now shes been all over it for the past 5 minutes.

No more ear shaking. She is enjoying her pink medicine. Lol.

I know she is young, almost 8 months, but stuff happens. Bunnies and babies are smiliar. Some just get more sick easier than others.

It’s quite possible she may only need this trim and then be fine or it could be every 6 months, every year…it’s really hard to say since all rabbits are different. Sometimes it takes a few trims to get it under control and then she’ll be fine for a long while. You’ll just have to be aware that there are possible dental problems and make sure she gets her annual exams and they check her teeth.

How frustrating! Like Sarita said, hay is going to be incredibly important to try and get her teeth to grind down the right way. There are other types you can try too like oat and brome. Different hays have different textures and some require more chewing than others.

She has begun to eat more hay! She emptied the hay I put in her litter box and ate more from her hay basket

She ran to her veggie plate and immediatley dragged her favorites off to eat And even ate some hay I put beside her veggies

Ah, .. I am so happy. I gave her lotsa compliments. I’m glad she is eating more.

Rucy would get spurs on her back molars too. At first they had to be filed down about every 3 months, and then over time she only had to have it done about twice a year.

I got used to recognizing signs that her teeth needed trimming.. I could just tell by the way she chewed it didn’t seem as comfortable, and she would also choose softer pieces of things.

No– she wasn’t a full Netherland. She was a mix between a martin and netherland. (well that was what was suspected— I don’t know for sure)

With willow baskets that you buy from the a store that aren’t meant for pets— just for decorating, you just want to be sure they haven’t been treated.  Many of them are, so just be careful when using regular decorating type baskets.

Tomorrow is the day that her follow up appointment is.

From my observation, Chacha’s eating decreased when the weather got really hot. Now, she has been eating a TON of hay like her usual self out of willow baskets that I’ve got for her. She is back to emptying the baskets during the night.

I’ve seen her shake her head, but not a lot. Just a little bit. I know rabbits will regularly shake their entire bodies.

Will update tomorrow night. I have a garage sale to do tomorrow morning after I get back from the vet.

Dr. Onorati checked her ears and her teeth.

No more teeth growth. It is the same as when he had to see her during the emergency visit. She has been eating her hay. He said as long as she is always eating, and her poops aren’t small, she is good.

Her ears are normal – a little redness, but it is normal. As long as she is not shaking her head. She will be on benebac still.

Next check up is in Spring 2011.

He said that I raised her very well and he is happy about it

He weighed her also and said that she looked bigger from when she had her spay in May

                                                              She gained 2 oz. Lol.

She is doing very well. She was very nosey today, watching people come in and out of the garage and looking at company from her binky bunny box

Little one.. I don’t want her to suffer.

I’m going to the vet that Peppi and Warri go to. She said the lady that sees animals there (recommended by the HRS) said the lady is very patient and answers every questions and is very involved with animal and owner. I like that.. I am getting a good vibe, despite not even going there yet.

The vet is booked up this week, but the receptionist put me on the waiting list. She said she will call me if any openings come up by cancelations of other patients. Otherwise, she told me to come in at 8 am on Thursday to get a full examination done.

Anything that is needed for Chacha, I will be notified.

The vet personally called me herself and consulted with me. She told me all the details, treatment plans, etc.

She is a wonderful lady. I can hear in her voice that she is truly a caring person.

Chacha has what is called scar tissue from the ear redness/rupture that she had.

The vet won’t be there next week, but said if Chacha experiences any pain, she has written a prescription for a pain reliever for her that can be picked up, but she doubs that she will need it.

She said Chacha is great, was scared this morning, but was fed some alfalfa hay and was very vibrent and healthy.

Follow up is in 2 weeks
